Typical Tasks
- Plan, organize and supervise a program of work, study, athletics and recreation for a group of delinquent or emotionally disturbed detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program, including activities such as housekeeping chores, clothing issue, personal hygiene, meals, arts and crafts and sports;
- Maintain good discipline and instruct detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program in acceptable behavior;
- Take proper action for non-cooperating detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program;
- Maintain visual surveillance and employ prescribed security measures;
- Conduct individual, group and family counseling and discussions;
- Assist detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program to gain insight into themselves and their relationships to family, peers and adults;
- Observe and record information on detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program behavior, attitude, appearance, interests and skills;
- Maintain necessary logs and reports;
- May help in diagnosis and assist the probation officer with development of a treatment plan for detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternate program;
- Admit and release detainees upon proper authority;
- Contact parents, probation officers, police and other individuals as required;
- Supervise visiting;
- Explain the purposes and procedures of the hall, facility or community based detention alternative program;
- May supervise volunteers and student interns;
- Remain alert for potential problems and take measures to reduce tensions and avoid possible violence;
- Attend and assist with unit meetings;
- Participate and assist in group, individual, and community based detention alternative program in-service training programs; transportation of youth from home to the community detention alternative program and home again, provide relief for other classifications as required.

Knowledge:
Group Supervisor I
- Some knowledge of:
- Basic factors that influence human behavior.
- Good health and hygiene and typical housekeeping methods.
- Basic interviewing principles and techniques.
Group Supervisor II
The above, plus:
- Working knowledge of:
- Principles and methods of detention and care of juveniles.
- Basic counseling techniques.
- Security requirements associated with juvenile detention and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program.
- Methods of juvenile behavior management.
Ability to:
Abilities required of I as trainee and II as journey
- Learn and apply the practices and procedures used in detention, custody and care of detainees and youth participating in a community based detention alternative program.
- Respond constructively to detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program behavior problems and understand and gain their cooperation.
- Plan, organize and direct a group of detainees and/or youth participating in a community based detention alternative program in work, meal and leisure time activities.
- Learn to anticipate and prevent acts of violence to persons and property.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Write clear and concise log entries and reports.
- Comprehend and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate effectively orally.
- Obtain a First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
- Stand and walk for extended periods of time up to 8 hours.
- Lift items weighing up to 35 pounds from floor level and 50 pounds from 12 inches above floor level, such as assisting in lifting a minor detainee, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Conduct individual, group and family counseling with juveniles with behavioral or emotional problems.
- Work without close supervision.
Training and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying, unless otherwise specified. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:
Group Supervisor I: Coursework in psychology, sociology, or other behavioral science, or experience involving the supervision, care or leadership of juveniles or adults.
Group Supervisor II: One year of experience performing duties comparable to a Group Supervisor I in Santa Cruz County.
Special Requirements/Conditions:
- License/Certificate Requirements: For both levels: Possession and maintenance of a valid California class C driver license during the course of employment. Ability to successfully complete CA State mandated Core training through the Standard and Training for Corrections (STC) program within the probationary period.
- Background Investigation: Ability to pass a full background investigation to meet provisions of Government Code 1029, 1029.1 and 1031.
- Special Working Conditions: Exposure to the possibility of bodily injury; infections which may cause chronic disease or death; combative minor detainees; offensive odors; high noise levels; insect bites; dust and pollens.
- Other Special Working Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment to be in compliance with the Division of Juvenile Justice requirements; must be a U.S. citizen or have a pending application for naturalization; must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays and on an emergency, as needed basis; Candidates are subject to the State of California Board of State and Community Corrections Title 15 - Minimum Standards for Juvenile Facilities and must pass a pre-employment medical evaluation and physical examination that meet the requirements of Title 15, Article 3.
