Road Superintendent (#MV8 )

Typical Tasks

  • Plans and coordinates work of County road districts and specialized maintenance section;
  • Determines priorities of special projects and road improvements;
  • Estimates man hours, equipment costs and material costs for special projects, routine road maintenance and work requested by other County departments;
  • Patrols roads to review completed work and work in progress;
  • Prepares weekly progress reports on maintenance activities;
  • Investigates complaints from the public regarding hazardous road conditions or activities of road crews and determines appropriate action;
  • Conducts staff meetings to discuss current work projects and coordinate use of heavy equipment;
  • Confers with subordinate supervisors and other departmental staff on injury accidents and safety hazards;
  • Conducts periodic training sessions on safety practices;
  • Handles personnel problems;
  • Attends meetings and conferences;
  • Maintains records on divisional operations;
  • Prepares correspondence and reports. Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

  • Thorough knowledge of methods, equipment and materials used in road maintenance operations;
  • Thorough knowledge of methods of estimating costs of road maintenance projects;
  • Thorough knowledge of the capabilities, operation and maintenance of light and heavy road construction equipment;
  • Thorough knowledge of accepted safety practices in road maintenance work;
  • General knowledge of budgeting techniques;
  • General knowledge of the principles of supervision, training and personnel management.

Ability to:

  • Plan, organize and administer extensive road maintenance program;
  • Coordinate and direct the work of a large staff engaged in a variety of road maintenance and repair activities;
  • Understand and interpret engineering plans and specifications;
  • Prepare reports and correspondence;
  • Maintain accurate records;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this knowledge and abilities would be:

Six years of experience in road maintenance or construction work, including two years performing duties comparable to those of a Public Works Supervisor in Santa Cruz County or performing duties which would demonstrate application or possession of the knowledge's and abilities listed for Road Superintendent in Santa Cruz County.
