Typical Tasks
- Plans and coordinates work of County road districts and specialized maintenance section;
- Determines priorities of special projects and road improvements;
- Estimates man hours, equipment costs and material costs for special projects, routine road maintenance and work requested by other County departments;
- Patrols roads to review completed work and work in progress;
- Prepares weekly progress reports on maintenance activities;
- Investigates complaints from the public regarding hazardous road conditions or activities of road crews and determines appropriate action;
- Conducts staff meetings to discuss current work projects and coordinate use of heavy equipment;
- Confers with subordinate supervisors and other departmental staff on injury accidents and safety hazards;
- Conducts periodic training sessions on safety practices;
- Handles personnel problems;
- Attends meetings and conferences;
- Maintains records on divisional operations;
- Prepares correspondence and reports. Special Requirements Possession of an appropriate California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

- Thorough knowledge of methods, equipment and materials used in road maintenance operations;
- Thorough knowledge of methods of estimating costs of road maintenance projects;
- Thorough knowledge of the capabilities, operation and maintenance of light and heavy road construction equipment;
- Thorough knowledge of accepted safety practices in road maintenance work;
- General knowledge of budgeting techniques;
- General knowledge of the principles of supervision, training and personnel management.

- Plan, organize and administer extensive road maintenance program;
- Coordinate and direct the work of a large staff engaged in a variety of road maintenance and repair activities;
- Understand and interpret engineering plans and specifications;
- Prepare reports and correspondence;
- Maintain accurate records;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this knowledge and abilities would be:
Six years of experience in road maintenance or construction work, including two years performing duties comparable to those of a Public Works Supervisor in Santa Cruz County or performing duties which would demonstrate application or possession of the knowledge's and abilities listed for Road Superintendent in Santa Cruz County.
