Under supervision, perform a variety of routine service, repair and preventative maintenance work on heavy equipment, trucks and automobiles; and perform other duties as required.

This entry level classification is responsible for performing basic maintenance and repair work on heavy equipment, trucks and automobiles. Incumbents in this classification assist Heavy Equipment Mechanics with more complex maintenance and repair duties. This classification is distinguished from the higher level classification of Heavy Equipment Mechanic I in that the latter classification performs the full range of repair and maintenance work on heavy equipment and vehicles.

Perform general service and light maintenance of heavy equipment, light, medium and heavy trucks, and automobiles; change oil and filters; lubricate equipment and vehicles; inspect fluid levels and make necessary adjustments; change and repair tires; replace and install minor accessories, such as mirrors, wipers and lamps; assist mechanics in the repair and rebuilding of heavy equipment and trucks; use a variety of hand and shop tools; assist with stocking and ordering of parts; complete maintenance forms and service records; drive vehicles to off-site maintenance facilities; maintain shop area and parts room in a clean and orderly condition; and input and access data using a computer workstation.

Knowledge of:

Working knowledge of:

• Basic service methods used on automobiles, trucks or heavy equipment.

Some knowledge of:

• The methods, tools and equipment used in servicing and repairing heavy equipment and light, medium and heavy trucks.
• Safety practices to be observed when maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment.

 Ability to:

• Use hand and power tools safely.
• Read, understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Complete and maintain basic records.
• Learn to operate heavy equipment and trucks.
• Work cooperatively with others.
• Learn to input and access data using a computer terminal.
• Lift items weighing up to 75 pounds.
• Perform tasks requiring strength, such as two people positioning 100 pound equipment blades, carrying equipment, climbing onto equipment, and mounting tires onto trucks and construction equipment.
• Drive and operate vehicles and equipment as required.
• Hear and distinguish various sounds, such as voices of co-workers in noisy environments and sounds of operating equipment.
• Distinguish colors, such as color-coded wires and colors of fluids.
• Distinguish temperatures of equipment, to avoid burns.
• Use impact tools, such as tire guns and sledge hammers, which cause body vibration. Perform tasks which require manual dexterity, such as assembling small parts and pouring liquids into receptacles.

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying, unless otherwise specified. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

One year of experience performing basic servicing of automobiles, trucks, or heavy equipment.

OR

An associate's degree in automotive mechanics, automotive technology or a closely related field.

OR

A certificate of completion in automotive mechanics, automotive technology or a closely related field from a vocational or trade school or college.

Special Requirements/Conditions:

License Requirement: Possession of a valid California class C driver license; and, within six months from hire, possession of a valid class B driver license with Tank Endorsement.

Special Working Conditions: Exposure to: variable temperatures and weather conditions; cramped work spaces; heights, such as on ladders and equipment; high levels of noise; electrical hazards; dust and silica dust; allergens, such as poison oak and stinging insects; unpleasant odors; the possibility of experiencing burns, bodily injury and contact with toxic substances or chemical irritants; and, for some assigned tasks, possible exposure to needles or blood which could possibly result in chronic disease or death.

Other Special Requirements: ·

• Alcohol and drug tests: will be administered to all candidates prior to final selection for positions requiring class A or B driver licenses upon entry and to employees in positions requiring these licenses, as mandated by Department of Transportation federal regulations. In addition, all candidates must provide specific employment history for up to the past ten years for all jobs they have held which required operation of a commercial motor vehicle. ·
• Incumbents must provide the basic required tools upon employment and must provide the additional required tools within twelve months of employment.
