Distinguishing Characteristics
Typical Tasks
- Installs and maintains electrical panel boards, conduits, circuits, fixtures, motor starters and controls, switches, outlets and other electrical equipment according to approved codes;
- Repairs electrical circuits and equipment such as generators, power control panels, alternators and distribution systems;
- Identifies causes for electrical failures or malfunctions;
- Replaces worn or inadequate wiring;
- Tests circuits and determines requirements for additional electrical equipment;
- Plans circuitry paths or modifies electrical systems to accommodate new construction or existing facility alteration;
- Climbs ladders; assist in installing panel boards;
- Install switch boxes, pull boxes and other related devices;
- Measure, cut, thread, bend, assemble and install conduits and other kinds of electrical conductor enclosures, which connect panels, boxes, outlets and other devices;
- Estimates costs and materials required;
- Reads and interprets blue prints, schematic diagrams and sketches to perform installation, maintenance and repairs;
- Maintains records of work performed and prepares reports;
- May supervise workers assigned to assist on various projects.

Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of:
- The principles and practices of installing, maintaining and repairing electrical systems and equipment.
- The tools and equipment used in installing, maintaining and repairing electrical systems and equipment.
Working knowledge of:
- The National Electrical Code.
Ability to:
- Install, repair and maintain a variety of electrical systems and equipment.
- Trace and identify causes of electrical failures or malfunctions and restore to approved operating standards.
- Plan and modify circuitry paths.
- Read, interpret and work from blue prints, schematic diagrams, plans and specifications.
- Maintain accurate records of work assigned and prepare reports under supervision.
- Assists in determining work methods and types of materials to be used;.
- Maintain a safe working environment.
- Lift and carry tools and equipment as needed.
- Work in an aerial lift as needed.
- Estimate materials and costs of electrical installations and repairs.
- Maintain accurate records of work assigned and prepare reports.
- Supervise workers assigned to assist.
Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the knowledge and abilities, is qualifying, unless otherwise specified. Typical ways to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:
Completion of an apprenticeship program as an electrician and certification as such from the Apprenticeship Standards Division of the State of California Industrial Relations Department.
OR
Five years full-time, or its equivalent, progressively responsible experience in commercial or industrial electrical work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License. Note: Candidates with an out of state license may apply and go through recruitment and examination process, however verification of California License must be provided at time of appointment.
Background Investigation: Fingerprinting is required.
