Definition

Under general supervision, perform semi-skilled landscaping, construction, maintenance and repair tasks related to park development and maintenance; clean and maintain park buildings; and do related work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Park Maintenance Worker I is the entry level in the series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents perform routine grounds and building maintenance, gardening, clean-up and unskilled manual work and may learn to operate equipment such as tractors, mowers, and to perform semi-skilled work in varying craft areas. Incumbents, after gaining and demonstrating the required level of proficiency in equipment operation and semi-skilled work in one or more areas, may be eligible for promotion to Parks Maintenance Worker II at the discretion of the appointing authority.

Park Maintenance Worker II is the journey-level class in the series. Incumbents are skilled in operating light equipment and power tools, perform semi-skilled pruning and landscape care tasks, and are able to apply the techniques and use the tools of one or more of these categories; carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical work, small equipment repair or welding. Also included is the assignment and training of one or more unskilled workers.

Typical Tasks

TYPICAL TASKS

  • Prepares soil for planting and plants, fertilizes, trims and prunes shrubs, trees, lawns and flowers;
  • Applies pesticides;
  • Cleans and maintains park structures including restrooms, picnic areas, stoves, fire rings, playground equipment, pools, and recreation areas; strips, waxes, and buffs floors and washes windows in park buildings;
  • Collects and hauls trash and garbage;
  • Clears weeds and brush; digs trenches; mows, rakes and edges lawns;
  • Cleans oils and sharpens clippers, mowers and other equipment;
  • Cuts and threads pipe;
  • Paints or stains structures, benches, tables, signs, trash cans, barricades and fences;
  • Cleans up work areas;
  • Builds forms and pours concrete;
  • Replaces broken windows;
  • Lays pipe, installs sprinkler heads and timers;
  • Installs playground equipment;
  • Services and maintains water and filtering pumps;
  • Constructs and repairs rock walls and barriers;
  • Performs rough carpentry;
  • Operates chain saws, brush and stump chippers, trucks and other power and hand tools;
  • Operates light equipment such as tractors and riding mowers;
  • Installs and makes major repairs to sprinkler, irrigation and water systems using various type materials, sprinkler heads and time clocks;
  • Performs construction, maintenance and repair work on park structures and equipment using skills in the crafts of carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical work, small equipment repair and welding;
  • Works from simple plans and blueprints;
  • Performs minor repairs to power and hand tools and vehicles;
  • As a crew leader on a specific assignment, assigns and coordinates the work of others; and
  • Trains unskilled and temporary employees in the procedures of the work.

Park Maintenance Worker II

Working knowledge of:

  • Landscaping and grounds maintenance, including plant and lawn care, mowing, watering and spraying.
  • The techniques and tools used in one or more of these categories: carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical work, or welding.


Ability to:

  • Abilities required of all positions, level I as entry level and level II as journey.
  • Perform heavy manual labor which entails frequent lifting and carrying of heavy/bulky items such as construction materials, bags of cement, jack hammers, picnic tables, pesticide sprayers, backpack blowers, and full garbage cans which weigh up to 75 pounds.
  • Operate and use hand and power tools.
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks, which require manual dexterity such as dismantling and repairing sprinkler heads.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Read simple plans and blueprints.
  • Make simple arithmetic computations.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Interact effectively with others.
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of park facilities, grounds and equipment.
  • Assign work and train others on specific assignments.
  • Read and interpret written reports and directions.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs to power tools and vehicles.
  • Distinguish colors to perform tasks such as electrical wiring and matching paints.
  • Distinguish sounds such as warning signals, approaching vehicles, and persons speaking at varying levels in noisy environments.

Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

Park Maintenance Worker I:

No specific training or experience is needed to qualify for this level.

Park Maintenance Worker II:

One year of experience performing facility repair and grounds/landscape maintenance, including six months of landscape construction/maintenance, which would provide the knowledge and abilities, listed above.

Special Requirements/Conditions:

License Requirement: Possession of a valid California class C driver license.

Special Working Conditions: Variable temperatures and weather conditions which will include exposure to sun; confined workspaces; heights, such as on ladders, scaffolding and roofs; strong and unpleasant odors and fumes; noise; exposure to allergens such as poison oak, pollen, and bee stings; the possibility of exposure to infections which might cause chronic disease or death; and the possibility of exposure to toxic substances or chemical irritants.

Other Special Requirements: Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and for emergencies, as needed.
