Definition

Under general supervision, to administer server hardware, software, operating systems, and security; and to do other work as required. This includes the design, installation, configuration, optimization, maintenance and support of host systems and may include database server administration and systems programming.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the advanced journey level class.? Incumbents perform complex, difficult and varied duties and may act as a team leader. Work requires the use of independent judgment and is usually performed under limited supervision or direction. Incumbents: readily identify core problems and apply problem-solving skills to resolve complex problems, often under tight time constraints; demonstrate in-depth understanding of department/unit data flow; and exercise independent judgment regarding high-impact infrastructure implementations. Incumbents are typically responsible for the reliability and availability of multiple system services and may administer a small site alone or assist in the administration of a large system; they are typically responsible for multiple production databases, including backup and recovery support. Contact with customers/users generally pertains to resolving highly challenging and/or high-impact issues. Errors could jeopardize the assigned project(s) and may have significant financial exposure across the enterprise. Legal exposure, financial impact and lost time resulting from data management errors are significant.

Typical Tasks

  • Designs, configures, documents, and maintains networked multi-user computer operating systems.
  • Analyzes computer system and network performance and takes corrective action for operational problems.
  • Modifies configurations to improve system performance, security, and user functionality.
  • Develops and configures systems programs and applications.
  • Researches vendor options and may make recommendations.
