Definition

Under direction, plans, promotes, implements, coordinates and supervises the daily activities of a variety of aquatics programs, including but not limited to public swim, special events, adult fitness, water aerobics, swim lessons, lifeguard training, Red Cross certification, water polo, junior lifeguards and facility usage; supervises the work of aquatics program staff; schedules a variety of aquatics programs; and performs other work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This class differs from the higher level of Aquatics Supervisor in that the latter has overall program responsibility for its assignment, and provides direction to the Aquatics Coordinator. Aquatics Coordinators plan, implement and coordinate the daily activities of their assigned programs. Aquatics Coordinator differs from the class of Aquatics Program Specialist in that the latter is focused on training lifeguards and the public in water rescue and water safety, supervising aquatic aides and lifeguards and enforcing safety policies in the aquatics facilities, while the Aquatics Coordinator coordinates multiple aquatics programs and supervises assigned staff, including Aquatics Program Specialists.

Typical Tasks

 ·       Plans, coordinates and implements the daily activities of aquatics programs, including but not limited to public swim, special events, adult fitness, water aerobics, swim lessons, lifeguard training, Red Cross certification, water polo, junior lifeguards and facility usage;
·       Recruits, selects, schedules, motivates, evaluates and trains program staff and volunteers;
·       Develops schedules of activities for assigned programs;
·       Recommends policies and procedures for assigned programs;
·       Evaluates existing and proposed programs, costs and facilities and makes recommendations for improvement, continued use and/or inclusion in aquatics services;
·       Develops and monitors assigned program budgets;
·       Prepares brochures, flyers, advertising and other publicity materials to promote aquatics programs, special events and facility use;
·       Coordinates and supervises special events, including scheduling facility use
and transportation, processing payments for supplies and admission, and preparing and distributing publicity materials;
·       Answers questions and explains aquatics programs and services to the public;
·       Responds to complaints regarding programs, fees and refund policies;
·       Gathers information and prepares reports as directed;
·       Attends meetings and conferences;
·       Assists in grant preparation; and

·       Substitutes for subordinate staff as needed.

· Travel to and perform duties at variety of outdoor and indoor recreation sites.

Education and Experience:

 

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Completion of college with major coursework in recreation or related field and one year of experience coordinating or supervising aquatics program activities or aquatics special events.

 

OR

 

Three years of experience coordinating or supervising aquatics and/or recreation program activities or special events, at least one year of which must be in aquatics.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

 

  License/Certificate:

Possession of a valid American Red Cross (ARC) lifeguard training certificate*;
Possession of a valid ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPR Pro) certificate* or American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Health Care Profession (Provider C);

* Acceptable Lifeguard and CPR Certifications include:

    American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED

 

    OR

 

    American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid

 

    WITH

 

    The American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

 

    OR

 

    The American Red Cross CPR – AED for Lifeguards

 

Post-employment certifications required within six months of hire:

  1. ARC Trainer certificates for Lifeguard and Title 22 courses.
  2. A valid Oxygen Administration certificate.
  3. A valid ARC Water Safety Instructor certificate or Santa Cruz County Instructor Training Program.

 

AND

 

  1.  Attain one of the following:
    • First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22),
    • ARC Emergency Responder,
    • First Responder,

OR

    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

Background Investigation:

Fingerprinting is required.

Special Working Conditions:

Exposure to variable temperatures and weather conditions; strong and unpleasant odors and fumes such as chlorine; noise from children; allergens such as poison oak, pollen, and bee stings; pool chemical fluctuations which might cause irritation to eyes and skin; and the possibility of administering first aid which may involve exposure to infections which might cause chronic disease or death.
