Definition

Under direction, to make minor carpentry, plumbing and electrical repairs on County buildings and equipment; to perform janitorial duties; and to do other work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This position works in the Government Center and has as a primary function the relieving of building maintenance personnel in the performance of some of the elementary carpentry, electrical and plumbing duties, as well as performing some custodial duties. The position is used to train the incumbent to become qualified for advancement to a building maintenance worker.

Typical Tasks

  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and buffs floors; sweeps, vacuums, shampoos and steam cleans carpets; dusts and polishes furniture; removes and hangs drapes and curtains; empties waste receptacles and disposes of trash; maintains restrooms in sanitary condition and replenishes supplies; opens buildings; locks exterior doors and turns off lights; washes windows inside and out in high rise building; sets up rooms for meetings; moves and arranges office equipment and furniture, relamps fluorescent light fixtures.
  • Makes minor repairs on toilets and faucets to stop leaks and running; tightens floor outlets; changes ballasts in light fixture; pulls wire through channels to outlets; patches floors; adjusts doors for proper closing; repairs wooden furniture and shelving; hangs bulletin boards, clocks, pictures and fixtures; uses a variety of hand tools to accomplish maintenance tasks; may assist the plumber or building maintenance worker on a variety of maintenance functions.

Employment Standards

Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in janitorial work. Some knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in minor maintenance repairs.

Ability to:

  • Perform a full range of janitorial duties. Use standard hand and power tools utilized to make minor maintenance repairs.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Six months of full-time janitorial work.

Physical Qualification:

  • Requires performing heavy, fatiguing work; climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping and lifting containers, materials and equipment up to 75 pounds.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
