Definition

Under general supervision, to inventory, sort, store and issue clothing, bedding, linens, and household cleaning supplies; to mend clothing bedding and linens; to launder clothing and linens; to perform various household cleaning tasks; and to do other work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This single position class works in juvenile hall. The incumbent keeps track of linens and supplies, mends clothing and performs light housekeeping duties. This class is distinguished from the class of custodian in that the latter class is responsible for the performance of janitorial duties.

Typical Tasks

Prepares heavy clothing, blankets, sheets and towels for transportation to commercial laundry; sorts, counts, checks, and stores clothing and linens; stores and issues personal hygiene and disposable household supplies; maintains inventory on clothing, household supplies and linens; marks clothing; keeps storeroom in order; operates sewing machine to mend clothing, bedding and linens; launders clothing, towels and tennis shoes; washes toilets, sinks, showers and windows; cleans and sanitizes pillows, blankets and mattresses; directs juveniles in housekeeping tasks such as mopping floors, washing walls, and collecting and sorting linen, bedding and clothing.

Employment Standards

Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of sewing and mending methods and materials and operation of simple sewing machines.
  • Working knowledge of washing methods for various materials and proper use of washers and dryers.
  • Working knowledge of materials and techniques used in household cleaning.

Ability to:

  • Maintain inventories on items issued and received.
  • Follow written and oral directions.
  • Command respect and work cooperatively with children.
  • Mend and sew clothing and bedding.
  • Operate small sewing machine.
  • Operate washer and dryer.

Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities listed above is qualifying.

Special Requirements: Candidates are subject to the State of California Board of State and Community Corrections Title 15 – Minimum Standards for Juvenile Facilities and must pass a preemployment medical evaluation and physical examination that meet the requirements of Title 15, Article 3.
