POSITION INFORMATION

The Department of Facilities Management, Museums Division is seeking an extra-help Exhibit Preparator Assistant to help build, clean and maintain exhibits in the counties eight museums. The ideal candidate will have experience in fabrication, art, painting, and carpentry with some knowledge of graphic design.

*Temporary/Extra-help assignments are limited to 28 hours per week with a cap of 999 hours or 960 hours for CalPERS retired annuitants in a fiscal year and are not eligible for benefits.

DEFINITION

To assist in the planning, design, construction and installation of exhibits and displays at all County museums and to formulate material lists.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Museum Program Manager and Exhibit Preparator.

May exercise technical and functional supervision over volunteers.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assist in the construction of rough and finished three-dimensional exhibits using carpentry through to finished including background painting, sculptural work, textile fabrication and lettering, graphic design, silk screening and photography, fiberglassing special effects, animation.
  • May supervise and work with volunteer work crews in exhibit construction and detailing and museum maintenance.
  • Assist in coordination of work crews, equipment, tools and supplies and provide for transportation to various museum work sites. 
  • Assist in the purchase of materials and supplies for exhibit construction and museum maintenance.
  • Pack and transport artifacts and props for use in exhibits or storage; set up and dismantle exhibits.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other County employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

It is the responsibility of applicants to identify in their application materials how they meet the minimum qualifications listed below.

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: One year of experience using various types of hand and power tools used in the construction and facility maintenance fields.

Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.  Additional specialized training in building technology trades or a related field is desirable.

Required License or Certificate:
May need to possess a valid driver’s license as required by the position.  Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Proper use of hand and power tools and specialty tools; i.e., vertical saw/chisel, motor-tool engraver/carver.
  • Arithmetic and basic mathematical calculations.
  • Principles and practices of work safety.

Ability to:

  • On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules.  Intermittently analyze problems with equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret assignments; remember equipment and artifact location; and explain jobs to others.
  • Intermittently, sit, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing installation of exhibits; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation; use telephone and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift very heavy weight.
  • Learn the principles and practices of museum exhibit and display design, construction and finishing.
  • Learn the principles and practices of carpentry work, alterations and repairs.
  • Continue learning new techniques, products and tools as related to exhibit construction.
  • Use hand and power tools. 
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Training & Experience Rating (100%)

Based upon responses to the supplemental questionnaire, the applicant’s education, training, and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

Prior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination (which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation), sign a constitutional oath, and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S.  For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation (which may include a voice stress analysis and/or a polygraph), and/or be bonded. Additionally, positions in law enforcement classifications and those supporting law enforcement functions will be required to complete a conviction history questionnaire prior to or during the interview process. Applicants for positions with access to Medi-Cal billing software or who are licensed providers must clear the Federal Exclusion List, credentialing, and social security verification. Failure to clear these requirements may result in an employment offer being withdrawn.

SUBSTITUTE LISTS

The eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be certified as a substitute list for a substantially similar classification.  For this purpose, a substantially similar classification is one at a lower level in the same classification (example: entry level vs. journey level) and/or a similar classification (similar work performed, similar training and experience qualifications required). If you are contacted for an interview by a County department, you will be informed of the classification and other relevant information. If you choose not to interview for a substantially similar classification, you will remain on the eligible list for which you originally applied.

EMPLOYEES OF OTHER PUBLIC AGENCIES

Placer County offers an expedited process for qualifying certain applicants for interviews.
