Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications for this classification will be invited to attend the written examination on Wednesday, March 11, 2020. Applicants who receive a passing score on the written examination will be invited to attend the oral examination on Thursday, April 2, 2020 (a second examination day will be added on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, only if necessary based upon the size of the applicant pool).
To plan, organize, and supervise staff personnel on an assigned shift engaged in the care and custody of adult prisoners incarcerated in a minimum, medium, and maximum security facility; to instruct and assist subordinates in the performance of their assigned duties; and to perform a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
The Supervisor/Correctional Sergeant level recognizes positions in the Correctional Officer series that perform full, first-line supervisory responsibilities including planning, assigning, and evaluation the work of subordinates. Incumbents of the class supervise sworn and non-sworn staff on an assigned shift and perform administrative functions in the field of corrections.
Receives general direction from a Sheriff's Lieutenant or other designated authority.
Exercises supervision directly and indirectly over sworn and non-sworn staff.

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Three years of experience in jail operations and inmate supervision at a level equivalent to the County’s class of Correctional Officer with at least two years as a Correctional Officer II.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade, supplemented by college level coursework in law enforcement or related field is desirable.

The written examination may include multiple choice, true/false, fill-in, matching, and/or essay type questions directly related to the required knowledge and abilities for this classification.
Oral Examination (60%)
The oral examination will be conducted by a panel of raters who will assess and rate the degree to which each applicant demonstrates the knowledge and abilities required for this classification. Applicants’ responses to a series of job related questions, as well as their education and experience, will be rated in relation to the requirements for this classification.
Prior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination (which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation), sign a constitutional oath and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S. For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation (which may include a voice stress analysis and/or a polygraph) and/or be bonded. Additionally, positions in law enforcement classifications, and those supporting law enforcement functions will be required to complete a conviction history questionnaire prior to or during the interview process. Applicants for positions with access to Medi-Cal billing software or who are licensed providers must clear the Federal Exclusion List, credentialing, and social security verification. Failure to clear these requirements may result in an employment offer being withdrawn.
The eligible list(s) resulting from this recruitment may be certified as a substitute list for a substantially similar classification. For this purpose, a substantially similar classification is one at a lower level in the same classification (example: entry level vs. journey) and/or a similar classification (similar work performed, similar training and experience qualifications required).
