Organizing and supervising groups of detained youth on a shift in recreational, work, and study activities, including meals, personal hygiene, athletics, and housekeeping chores.

Employing prescribed security measures while directing youth in their daily routine, and handling routine disciplinary problems.

Maintaining security and safety of youth and staff.

Analyzing individual behavior and social systems; interpreting and understanding human behavior.

Identifying potential problems among clients; explaining procedures and policies to inmates; problem-solving situations by mediating disputes.

Performing arrest, search, and seizure activities safely and within the confines of the law.

Admitting and releasing youth upon proper authority; booking youth; making detention decisions.

Searching detained youth for weapons, contraband, or narcotics.

Making frequent security checks of assigned areas to safeguard the youth, building, and equipment against disturbances, fires, and other hazards.

Assisting in the assessment and development of a treatment plan for detained youth.

Evaluating and conferring with supervisory personnel regarding medical problems and other issues related to youth.

Conducting individual and group crisis counseling to modify anti-social behavior and aid detainees in making proper adjustments to the detention situation.

Counseling youth and families in an attempt to create a constructive group social atmosphere.

Communicating with parents, probation officers, police, or other individuals.

Acting quickly and calmly in emergency situations; performing crisis intervention.

Managing physical confrontations; restraining physically aggressive youth and adults; applying restraints, handcuffs, and shackles.

Escorting and transporting adults and youth to a variety of locations, including courtroom appearances within the County and in other states.

Keeping and maintaining records and preparing reports.

Reading and applying court orders.

Training, orienting, and mentoring institutional staff; providing direction and explaining institution and department policies and procedures.

Monitoring staff performance.

Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Understanding of advanced principles and theory of criminal justice and rehabilitation as applied to criminal offenders, including youth.

Understanding of State and local laws and departmental policies and procedures affecting youth detention and probation.

Understanding of the principles and practices of leadership, motivation, team building, and conflict resolution.
