Supplemental Questionnaire

This is the supplemental questionnaire for the classification of Associate Surveyor. Part I will not be scored nor used for determining minimum qualifications but is provided for the applicant to review prior to completing the questionnaire and may also be used when determining assignment. Part II will be scored based on your checked responses.  Part III will not be scored but may be used by the hiring authority when determining which applicants to invite to hiring interviews. Narratives provided by applicants describing training and/or experience will not be scored but will be available to the hiring authority and may be utilized for interview and selection determinations.

By continuing in this examination process, you are certifying that all information provided in the supplemental questionnaire is true to the best of your knowledge. If selected for interview, you may be required to display and respond to questions to validate your responses to this exam.

Part I: Minimum Qualifications - Not Scored

This section will not be scored but may assist the applicant with determining how he/she meets the minimum qualifications for this position.  

Are you registered as a Licensed Land Surveyor in the State of California?

If yes, please provide your surveyor license number and expiration date.

Do you possess two years of responsible professional surveying experience performing duties similar to an Assistant Surveyor with Placer County?

Do you possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college with major course work in engineering technology or a related field?

If yes, please indicate your degree.

Applicants who reported a “No” response to any of the above are encouraged to review the minimum qualifications for this classification prior to proceeding.

Part II: Relevant Knowledge and Experience – Scored Examination

This section of the supplemental questionnaire is the Civil Service examination for this position. This supplemental questionnaire will be scored based on your checked responses below. Narratives provided by applicants describing training and/or experience will not be scored, but will be available to the hiring authority and may be utilized for interview and selection determination. Scores received from this section will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.

For the items in this section, please indicate your level of training and experience and then provide a brief description of your related experience in the space provided.

Resumes, letters, and other materials will not be evaluated nor considered as responses to the items in this supplemental questionnaire. In addition, responses to this questionnaire will not be used for determining minimum qualifications for this position.

Describe your experience planning, prioritizing, supervising, training, and reviewing the work of professional survey and technical staff.

Describe your experience evaluating operations and activities of assigned responsibilities, including recommending process improvements and modifications.

Describe your experience interpreting local, state, and federal regulations, laws, and codes including the Land Surveyors Act and the Subdivision Map Act.

Describe your experience preparing and reviewing parcel maps and final maps.

Describe your experience preparing and reviewing corner records and records of survey.

Describe your experience preparing legal descriptions and plats for easements, boundary adjustments, and property transfers.

Describe your experience using AutoCAD for preparing various survey maps.

Describe your experience resolving/retracing property boundaries, public land retracement, and road rights-of-way based upon research and acquired survey data.

Describe your experience using a robotic total station and post processing of data for various survey projects.

Describe your experience providing information regarding survey data, rights-of-way, easements, record maps, and status of projects to the public and private sector representatives.

Describe your experience preparing cost estimates/scope of work for survey projects, including submitting justification for staff, supplies, and equipment along with monitoring and controlling expenditures.

Part III: Narrative Questions - Not Scored

This section of the supplemental questionnaire will not be scored, but may be used by the hiring authority when determining which applicants to invite to hiring interviews. Please answer the questions as clearly, thoroughly, and concisely as possible.

Describe your experience supervising surveying staff.  In your response, include the amount of time you have spent supervising staff, as well as number of staff you supervised. 

Describe your experience preparing and processing the following:

a. Parcel Maps

b. Final Maps

c. Records of Survey

Describe your experience preparing cost estimates/scopes of work for survey projects, along with monitoring and controlling expenditures.

Describe the most interesting and/or innovative technique you have used when retracing a survey or establishing a boundary.
