The current vacancy is in the Auburn office and will be responsible for conducting both residential and commercial inspections throughout the greater Placer County area. This position requires possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Building Inspector issued by the International Code Council.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong inspection background, with experience in a combination of specialties, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and building, as well as plan checks and reviews. In addition, a CASp certificate is highly desired.
Please Note - Certificates that are attained by employees in this classification beyond those presented to meet the minimum qualification as stated in the Minimum Qualifications section below shall be compensated at the rate of fifty dollars ($50.00) per certificate per month up to a maximum of two hundred dollars ($200.00) per month for each of the certificates listed: plans examiner, plumbing, mechanical, electrical (commercial or residential). The County will reimburse a qualifying employee for all initial exams and renewal fees associated with the above certificate for up to three exams per year.

To review building plans and conduct inspections of residential and commercial buildings under construction or being remodeled; to determine compliance of plans and of buildings under construction with applicable State and County codes and standards.
This is the full journey level class within the Building Inspection series. This class is distinguished from the Building Inspector I by the assignment of the full range of duties assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and they are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the entry level.
This class is distinguished from the Senior Building Inspector in that the latter exercises technical and functional supervision over technical and clerical staff, reviews highly technical construction plans and performs difficult and complex field inspections.
Receives general supervision from management or supervisory staff; may receive technical or functional supervision from other technical or professional staff.
It is the responsibility of applicants to identify in their application materials how they meet the minimum qualifications listed below.
Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Two years of responsible experience performing duties similar to those of a Building Inspector I in Placer County.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional specialized training in the building trades or construction technology is desirable.
License of Certificate:
Training & Experience Rating (100%)
Based upon responses to the supplemental questionnaire, the applicant’s education, training and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.
The eligible list(s) resulting from this recruitment may be certified as a substitute list for a substantially similar classification. For this purpose, a substantially similar classification is one at a lower level in the same classification (example: entry level vs. journey) and/or a similar classification (similar work performed, similar training and experience qualifications required). If you are contacted for an interview by a County department, you will be informed of the classification and other relevant information. If you choose not to interview for a substantially similar classification, you will remain on the eligible list for which you originally applied.
Placer County offers an expedited process for qualifying certain applicants for interviews. Candidates currently employed, or employed within the last year, by a public agency operating under a personnel civil service or merit system may be eligible to be placed on a Public Agency Eligible List and certified as eligible for appointment to a similar job assignment without going through the examination process.
