The Department of Public Works & Facilities Fleet Services Division is seeking a Supervising Mechanic to work in the Tahoe Area. This assignment plans, organizes and supervises general vehicle maintenance for the County's fleet vehicles, trucks, transit buses, and heavy equipment. The ideal candidate will have at least three years of experience: performing skilled work in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered automotive, road and construction equipment; inspecting motorized and mechanical equipment; and diagnosing mechanical problems and determining extent of necessary repairs. Salary plus additional $775 per month Tahoe Branch Assignment Premium for employees who demonstrate and certify residency in the Tahoe basin.
To plan, organize, direct and supervise equipment (gasoline and diesel) maintenance and repair operations within the Fleet Services Division; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
The Supervisor level recognizes positions that perform full, first-line supervisory responsibilities including planning, assigning and evaluating the work of subordinates and is responsible for a program area within a work unit or Department.
Receives general direction from Assistant Fleet Services Superintendent and Public Works Manager.
Exercises direct supervision over assigned clerical and technical personnel.

Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible experience performing duties similar to those of a Master Mechanic in Placer County.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in heavy equipment (gasoline and diesel) diagnostics, maintenance and repair or a related field.

Based upon responses to the supplemental questionnaire, the applicant’s education, training and experience will be evaluated using a pre-determined formula. Scores from this evaluation will determine applicant ranking and placement on the eligible list.
Prior to the date of hire, applicants must undergo a fingerprint test by the Department of Justice, pass a medical examination, which may include a drug screening and possibly a psychological evaluation, sign a constitutional oath and submit proof of U.S. citizenship or legal right to remain and work in the U.S. For some positions, applicants may also be required to submit proof of age, undergo a background investigation and/or be bonded.
All new permanent employees, with the exception of sworn law enforcement and those in management and confidential groups, shall be required to join the employee organization or pay an 'Agency Fee' as a condition of employment.
