DEFINITION

To assist the Chief District Attorney Investigator in managing and directing the activities of the Investigations Division within the District Attorney’s Office; to coordinate activities within assigned programs, manage departmental employment background investigations, facilitate division training, and assist the Chief District Attorney Investigator with sensitive investigations.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Assistant Chief District Attorney Investigator is a single position class that serves as a full-line assistant to the Chief District Attorney Investigator, acts in the absence of the Chief District Attorney Investigator, and performs administrative and management tasks for the Chief as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives administrative general direction from the Chief District Attorney Investigator.

Exercises direct supervision over management, supervisory, professional, technical, and clerical staff.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist in the overall direction and management of the Investigations Division within the District Attorney’s Office
  • Assist in the development and implementation of division goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in the development of the investigation division’s work plan; assign work activities, projects, and programs; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures.
  • Recommend the appointment of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; conduct performance evaluations; implement discipline procedures; and maintain discipline and high standards necessary for the efficient and professional operations of the division.
  • Manage employment background investigations and related activity for the District Attorney’s Office.
  • Perform and oversee the most difficult, complex, and sensitive case work; conduct the most sensitive investigations, including assisting investigations of incidents involving peace officer shootings.
  • Participate in the preparation of the division’s budget; participate in the forecast of funds needed for projects, staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Confer with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies regarding prosecution or investigative matters assigned to the District Attorney’s Office; review and evaluate reports submitted by law enforcement agencies for criminal complaints.
  • May review and evaluate case files and investigation reports for trial readiness.
  • Represent the division to outside agencies and organizations; participate in outside community and professional groups and committees; provide technical assistance as necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is typically performed in an indoor office environment with controlled temperature conditions and outdoors in all weather conditions. Duties may be performed in close proximity to individuals who may be dangerous and/or uncooperative, firearms and other weapons, and other environmental conditions related to law enforcement fieldwork.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Training:

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: 

Experience:   

Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in criminal investigation operations, two of which must be in a District Attorney’s Office, and two years of supervisory responsibility.

Training:

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, business or public administration, or a related field.

Required License or Certificate:

  • May need to possess a valid driver’s license as required by the position. Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.
  • Possession of a current and valid Advanced certificate issued by the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (P.O.S.T.). Completion of the California P.O.S.T. Management Certificate within 12 months after appointment.

Special Qualifications:

Must be 21 years of age by date of appointment.

 Ability to:

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

Length of Probation:

All permanent appointments to this classification shall serve a probationary period of twelve (12) calendar months or two thousand eighty (2,080) hours, whichever is more.
