Salary: $49,500.00

Maintenance of roads and bridges. Lead worker over a maintenance crew operating power equipment and performing related maintenance and construction tasks.

Basic Purpose
Positions in this job family are responsible for operating power equipment and performing related tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways.

Typical Functions
• Operates equipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front-end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment and other equipment as needed.
•Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
•Repairs failures in the roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
•Repairs and/or replaces signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
•Provides traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.
•Applies herbicide to highway right-of-ways to control weeds and other unwanted vegetation.

Level Descriptor
This is the leadership level where incumbents are assigned responsibility of a lead worker over a maintenance crew operating power equipment and performing related maintenance and construction tasks.  Positions assigned to this level will direct the work as it is being done and provide on-the-job training as required, and evaluate the results of completed work and will perform the most complex duties assigned to the family.  Positions at this level may also be assigned responsibility for providing supervision in the absence of the supervisor to a highway maintenance crew.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the materials, equipment and techniques used in highway construction and maintenance; of supervisory techniques; of the proper placement of traffic control devices; of engineering plans and symbols; and of training principles.  Ability is required to train employees in new procedures; to communicate effectively; to operate heavy equipment used in highway construction and maintenance; and to use highway construction and maintenance materials.

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license at time of employment. Some agencies may require possession of a valid Oklahoma commercial driver’s license, class A or B with appropriate endorsements referenced in United States Department of Transportation Title 47, Chapter 6, Section 101 et seq. at time of appointment. Persons appointed to positions at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation or the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority must possess or obtain a commercial driver’s license, class A, no later than five months from the date of appointment. Applicants must take and pass drug test prior to appointment. Such tests will be administered through the appointing agency. This requirement is referenced in 49 Code of Federal Regulation, parts 40 and 382.  Applicants must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position; be willing to work hours other than on regular shifts during emergency situations; and possess a telephone in residence to receive emergency on-call duty messages. While performing the duties of this job, the employees are frequently required to stand, walk and reach; and talk and hear. Routinely, employees are required to sit; to manipulate or feel objects, tools or controls; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Employees must regularly lift 80 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of four years of experience in operating heavy equipment used in highway construction or maintenance.
