Nurse Manager Evening/Night Shifts

This position will be required to have computer knowledge and phone skills.  This position will be supervising the Night Nursing shift 7 pm to 7 am and the 2nd Shift (2:45 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.) and the 3rd Shift (10:45 p.m.  to 7:00 a.m.) Direct Care Specialist.  Primary work hours will be 2:00 pm - 10:00 pm  

Directly supervises the 7pm-7am Nurses, the Evening & Night DCS staff. Responsible for coordinating these shifts to include, approval of leave ensuring appropriate coverage, the number of patients in each HU, identified patient assignments, nursing coverage for emergencies, compliance w/hospital policies & procedures, coordination of field trips & completion of daily work.  Makes Nursing & DCS assignments for outside patient appointments & field trips. Oversees the completion of the call-in/message form for all Nursing Dept call-ins during shift or on-call.

Works in conjunction w/Day Nurse Manager in identifying & investigating patient care issues within 7 days. Presents recommendation of corrective action to DON prior to taking action.  Maintains Nursing & DCS staff disciplinary & training records.

Assists HU Nurses’ in providing patient intervention/care when a critical &/or emergency situation occurs.  Ensures appropriate action i.e. first aide, CPR, physician contact, vitals, safe & quality patient care is implemented.  Provides HU nursing care in the event of a nursing staff shortage or increased acuity need. Assists HU Nurses in safe & appropriate intervention, notification of personnel, obtainment of orders, & completion of documentation if patient restraint/seclusion occurs as outlined in hospital policies & procedures. 

Participates in briefings w/DON to properly communicate relevant patient care, nursing, safety & staffing issues.  Meets and collaborates w/Day RN Manager to communicate relevant patient care, nursing, safety & staffing issues that have arisen throughout the shift & coordinate any follow-up activities.  Participates in Nursing Admin On-Call w/DON & the Day Nurse Mgr to ensure 24-hour nursing administration coverage.

Participates in the Admission Review Committee.  Asks questions & determines if additional information is required prior to final approval for admission.  Makes in-patient admission recommendations, expresses concerns, and presents admission guidelines to the DON & committee (i.e. private room or specific HU assignment).  Makes final Nursing admission decision in conjunction w/Day Nurse Mgr if the DON is absent.

Participates in Rehab & Staffing meetings.  Presents patient medical/nursing information to attending physician.  Ensures orders are written & signed.  Communicates information received in staffing to hospital unit nurses & appointment nurses if warranted.

Participates in the development of a Nursing Mentorship program.  Ensures all competency training/education is completed within 6 months of employment w/90% completion.  Identifies, provides &/or coordinates additional patient care training as well as other requested education requirements to the Nursing or DCS staff on a routine or identified basis.  Participates in the Agency wide orientation program.

Responsible for reviewing, knowing & maintaining awareness of medical, therapeutic & behavioral goal for inpatients. Assists the hospital unit Nursing Staff, Lead RBTs & DCS staff in the coordination of patient care issues w/interdisciplinary team members.  Communicates w/patient team members to ensure patient issues are addressed appropriately and positive outcomes & established treatment goals are met.

Works closely w/Admission Nurse, HU Nurses, & interdisciplinary staff to ensure admissions, discharges/furloughs of patients are in accordance w/hospital policies/procedures.  Completes daily rounds.  Communicates info to & from Nurses & DCS staff to include patient care info, staffing info & issues, updates on management decisions, training info, patient & bed assignments, general hospital info, etc.  Identifies areas of improvements, wants & needs, & presents to mgmt staff.  Holds weekly meetings hospital unit to discuss patient, HU issues & areas for improvement. Oversees, reviews DCS attendance, patient assignments, use of on-call to ensure consistency & fairness among staff.

Serves on the following committees: Admission Review Committee, Behavior Staffing, Grievance Committee, Quality Assessment & Performance Improvement Committee, Safety Committee, & Grievance Committee.  Participates in the development & implementation of the Nursing QAPI, projects & Nursing QAPI meetings to include data collection & monitoring/oversight of data collection.  Identifies areas warranting improvement & may participate in the design &implementation of quality improvement projects.

Participates in behavior staffing committee ensuring behavioral care components are identified & developed appropriately & realistically for the in-patient population. Ensures behavioral components are appropriately incorporated in the in-patient nursing care plans. Collaborates w/ psychological and behavioral team in relation to the establishment & update of behavioral care components.  Communicates behavioral issues from nursing/direct care staff to the behavior staffing committee &/or psychological staff & changes/decisions rendered to the nursing/DCS staff.
Based on established acuity, input from Psychological/Behavioral staff, & the interdisciplinary team ensures patient assignments for the DCS staff are appropriate, in the best interest of the patient & comply w/hospital policies & procedures. Works in conjunction w/psychological and behavioral staff & Lead RBT in relation to patient primary & secondary assignments & behavioral acuity/1:1 assignment.  Ensures patient acuity information, individual patient acuity worksheet & daily report worksheets are accurate & filed appropriately.  

Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, & techniques; of expense control, & purchasing procedures; of the philosophy & objectives of the nursing dept; & of the principles & practices of effective supervision.  Ability is required to direct, motivate, & evaluate staff; to plan & implement programs; to develop controls to monitor effectiveness of programs; to communicate effectively both orally & in writing; & to establish/maintain effective working relationships w/others.


Requirements consist of possession of a valid permanent Oklahoma license as a registered nurse as approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing and three years of professional nursing experience, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity, or a bachelor's degree in nursing and two years of professional nursing experience, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity, or a master's degree and one year of professional nursing experience in a supervisory capacity.
