Basic Purpose:
Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities for supporting laboratory operations, performing maintenance functions and completing non-technical routine laboratory tests and procedures under the direction of professional staff.

Typical Functions:
•Make rounds to the units to collect labs
•Perform venipuncture, collects blood samples in appropriate tubes and appropriately label with identifying information.
•Promptly transport specimens to the lab. Enter pertinent information into patient log books.
•Process specimens and prepares them for testing.
•Readies equipment and reagents in preparation for testing.
•Records room temperature, refrigerator temperature and freezer temperature daily. 
•Under supervision of Clinical Laboratory Scientist, performs laboratory quality control testing and performs test on patient specimens to include hematology, chemistry, urinalysis & coagulation.
•Takes test result to appropriate nursing care units and places them in appropriate patient’s charts.

This is the career level where incumbents are fully qualified to perform a variety of routine laboratory tests and procedures using standard testing procedures and assists more experienced personnel in performing more complex testing procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the maintenance of routine records and reports; and of elementary laboratory techniques and safety precautions. Ability is required to perform basic laboratory tasks; to keep specimens properly marked; to maintain adequate written laboratory records; and to utilize a computer.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of possession of a valid permanent Oklahoma license as a licensed practical nurse as approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing plus three years of practical nursing experience; or Licensed Practical Nurse License recognized by the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) plus three years of practical nursing experience. Phlebotomy certified.
