Survey Division Announcement - Statewide


Positions in this job are assigned responsibility of continuing to gain experience and knowledge of the science and art required in implementing the professional skills of land surveying, geodetic surveying, American Land Title Association (ALTA) American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) surveys and dependent or independent surveys; or re-surveys of the public land system and serve as an expert witness for state and local agencies, consultants and the public.  Incumbents accomplish this by performing a variety of surveying tasks, under the supervision of a licensed Professional Land Surveyor, by reviewing and evaluating the work of state and local agencies and consultants.


The functions performed by employees in this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

• Develops, prepares and/or reviews land and real property surveys.
• Develops, prepares and/or reviews geodetic surveys.
• Performs mission planning for Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys and establishment of High Accuracy Reference Network (HARN) within the state.
• Performs, analyzes and makes recommendations for/against acceptance of network adjustments/closures.
• Performs land title ownership, public, cooperative and private research.
• Reviews land and geodetic activities and makes recommendations for changes in policies and procedures.
• Conducts research, prepares reports and provides expert assistance on the implementation of the science and art of geodetic surveying.
• Prepares reports and analysis of land geodetic survey progress and critical path scheduling.

The Land Surveyor Intern job family has two levels that are distinguished based on the complexity of the land and geodetic surveying assignments and the level of expertise required by the specific position.

Level I    Code:  S15A   
This is the basic level where incumbents will initially perform a variety of land and geodetic surveying tasks in a training status under close supervision by a licensed Professional Land Surveyor.  Incumbents will perform basic land and geodetic surveying tasks such as the review of less complex surveys, performance of basic surveying computations, writing reports and performing survey network adjustments using sophisticated computer software.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to perform the duties at this level include knowledge of basic land and geodetic surveying principles and skills; of survey mission planning, of survey equipment; of the art and science of surveying and its application; of calculus, trigonometry and analytic geometry; of statutes and case law pertaining to land and property boundaries; and the U.S. Public Land Survey System.  Ability is required to apply and implement the preceding knowledge in a practical manner to a land and geodetic survey.  Ability is required to prepare, read and interpret land survey drawings and plats, and to read and interpret engineering plans and drawings.  Incumbents must have the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; to relate ideas and technological capabilities to the needs and conditions presented and to quickly develop an appropriate course of action; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of an associate’s degree in land surveying.
