This position is located at the Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center in Tecumseh, OK.

Please note this is a safety sensitive position as defined by 63 O.S. § 427.8 (K)(1)(i)(2).  Therefore, even for those applicants in possession of a valid medical marijuana license, testing positive for marijuana will result in non-hire, as the position requires direct patient or direct child care.

Recreation Therapist III X36C - $41,587.40 annual

Under the direction and supervision of the Recreation Therapist IV this position will be primarily responsible for the coordination and implementation of the proposed 'Experiential Program' at Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center. This will consist of an outdoor adventure program which will emphasis hiking, camping, adventure, environmental awareness, personal development, safety training teamwork, and esteem building. This position will also be responsible for the 'Organized Athletics Program'. In addition this position will be responsible for implementing a plan to target evening idle time hours. This will allow COJC to provide better services to the residents during those hours. This position will be able to identify units that are experiencing the most difficulty and provide them with additional therapeutic services. These additional programs will allow COJC to improve compliance with all mandated American Correctional Association Standards (ACA) and Performance Based Standards (PBS).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the concepts, principles, techniques and equipment used in recreational therapy; of outdoor adventure/wilderness recreational activities; of the goals of recreational therapy and its interrelationship with other treatment programs; of the causes of abnormal behavior and behavior modification techniques; of human anatomy and physiology; of medical terminology; and of community based treatment programs. Ability is required to supervise and plan various types of recreational activities; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to exercise initiative and independent judgment; to work with mentally ill or physically handicapped clients; to motivate volunteer program aides; to interview and counsel patients; and to assess physical, social and behavioral abilities.

Special requirements:
Must be able to pass background check and drug screening.
A probation/trial period may be required.
Position requires shift work (Monday-Friday after 5 and weekends; schedule to be determined by Superintendent).

Applicants must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position.

Prefer applicants that are willing to become certified lifeguard within six months of appointment


Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a master’s degree in recreational therapy, outdoor recreation or physical education and one year of experience in recreational therapy; or a bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy, outdoor recreation or physical education and two years of experience in recreational therapy; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; or a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation and certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).

## Note: Persons eligible to sit for the national exam provided by the NCTRC may apply and be selected, but must obtain certification within the six-month probationary period.
