Recreation Specialist

OTRD is seeking a full-time Recreation Specialist at Sequoyah Lodge in Wagoner, OK. OTRD provides matching contributions to employees’ retirement plans, 11 holidays, and 15 days of annual and sick leave a year. OTRD also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a benefit allowance to offset the cost of insurance premiums for employees and their eligible dependents. The annual salary for this position is $30,702.

This position is responsible for supervising summer recreation assistant staff and assisting in recreational programs and activities for the Sequoyah Lodge guest. Work schedule is 40 hours per week which may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. The incumbent in this position is exposed to all weather conditions, including rain, humidity, extreme heat and cold.

Summer Peak Season (April – September)
• Supervises summer recreation staff, volunteers, or other workers involved in recreational programs and activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with staff, assists with complex/problem situations, and provides technical expertise.
• Plans, coordinates, and assists in conducting various youth/adult guest activities involving sports, outdoor recreational activities, indoor recreational activities, and special events.
• Supervises activities of lodge guest using recreation equipment or participating in recreation programs; explains policies and procedures to guest; handles situations involving excessive noise, disruptive behavior, or other problems at key areas such as the pool, courts, and rec center.
• Monitors safety/security of program participants and recreational facilities; responds to injuries/illnesses, applies first aid to injuries, and contacts emergency medical services for assistance as needed; monitors courts to ensure proper conditions for programs/activities; evaluates weather conditions, and determines whether to discontinue activities or close pool as appropriate; identifies maintenance problems and initiates requests for necessary work; reports hazardous conditions or other situations to appropriate personnel.
• Performs general maintenance tasks as needed in support of recreational program operations.

Off Season (October – March)
• Keeps an inventory of equipment, and supplies; monitors inventory levels to ensure availability of adequate supplies to conduct activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials. Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, database, spreadsheet, program scheduling/registration, desktop publishing, or other software programs; performs basic maintenance of computer system and office equipment, such as backing up data or replacing paper, ink, or toner.
• Operates a variety of equipment and tools associated with programs and work activities, which may include a motor vehicle, passenger van, tractor, sound systems, air pump, television, DVD, shovel, rake, hand tools, artist supplies, cooking supplies, first aid supplies, or general office equipment. • Maintains an awareness of applicable rules, policies, procedures, trends, and advances in the profession; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
• Assist with any special events with the Sequoyah State Park and Three Forks Nature Center such as guiding hikes, outdoor education programs and golfing tournaments. 
• Learn/Performs front desk duties: check-in/outs, reservations, general/clerical tasks, which may include answering telephone calls, making copies, filing documentation, processing incoming/outgoing mail, or running errands.
• Aids other employees or departments as needed and/or performs other related duties as required.


Requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree in a recreation field or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of experience in recreation or education closely related work for each year of the required education.
