Position is located at the Southwest Oklahoma Juvenile center in Manitou OK. 

Fire Prevention & Safety Officer / 4353 - Annual Salary $27,473.30

SOJC- This is an unclassified, term-limited position.  Per 10A O.S. § 2-7-202: Effective June 1, 2020, employees hired for service at the Southwest Oklahoma Juvenile Center in Manitou shall be considered unclassified and employed in a term-limited appointment. If state services continue at the facility after the designated term, the employee may be transferred into a non-term-limited position.

'This position is a safety sensitive position as defined by 63 O.S. § 427.8 (K)(1)(i)(2) due to providing direct child care. Therefore, those applicants testing positive for marijuana will not be hired even when in possession of a valid medical marijuana license.'

BASIC PURPOSE:
Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities at a state facility or institution involving the inspection of buildings and grounds for elimination of fire hazards, enforcement of laws, rules and regulations and providing security against acts of terrorism for state facilities, employees and the public.  This may include patrolling assigned premises to identify and correct fire hazards, providing assistance to employees or visitors, directing traffic and performing other duties related to the protection of state property, employees, visitors and others.  Some positions may be primarily responsible for fire prevention activities and have additional responsibilities assigned for assisting in firefighting activities.
 
The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

Maintain comprehensive safety program, inspect all fire alarms, sprinkler systems, portable fire extinguishers, vent hood suppression system, pump house including fire and jockey pump, smoke alarms and sprinkler heads for material condition and operation.  Also will conduct in-service training to meet orientation and annual training requirements for HAZ-COM, Driver Awareness and Fire Extinguisher

Patrols and inspects buildings and grounds, within an assigned area, to detect and eliminate fire hazards and discourage vandalism. Interprets and enforces rules and regulations; safeguards life and property at state facilities or institutions and surrounding grounds. Responds to fire alarms and reports irregular activities; apprehends or expels violators; answers inquiries and gives directions to employees and the general public. Ventilates buildings to remove heat, smoke and gases; makes forced entries to rescue persons during fires or other emergencies. Checks authorized persons in or out of buildings and grounds area and assures that unauthorized persons are denied access; checks to see that doors and windows are secure and lights are out; directs traffic in the vicinity of state facilities and parking areas. Prepares oral and written reports of activities and incidents.

This is the career level of the job family where employees are assigned duties and responsibilities at the full-performance level and perform a variety of tasks involving patrolling and inspecting buildings and grounds within assigned areas and enforcing laws, rules and regulations in safeguarding life and property.  This includes inspecting hydrants and sprinklers for proper operation; checking fire extinguishers, emergency lighting and alarm systems for proper condition; inspecting places of public assembly for any violation of security or fire prevention practices; administering emergency measures; instructing institution employees in firefighting, first aid and other security procedures; responding to fire alarms and determining causes; and assisting in firefighting activities if required.  At this level, limited direction and training may be provided to entry level employees performing security and fire prevention duties.
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required at this level include those identified in Level I plus knowledge of fire causes and the proper procedures for extinguishing various types of fires; of procedures to properly and safely operate various types of equipment and apparatuses; and of first aid.  Ability is required to conduct security operations for an assigned facility or institution and surrounding grounds; to operate and maintain firefighting equipment; and to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
 
Education and Experience
Requirements at this level consist of a basic security and/or firefighter's course and two years of experience in security or fire prevention and protection work.

Special Requirements:
Applicants must possess a valid Oklahoma Driver License at the time of employment and maintain a valid license while employed in this job family.
Must be able to pass background check and drug screening
