The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) is committed to providing quality health services to Oklahoma citizens. The mission of the Department of Health is to promote, protect and improve the health of all Oklahomans through strategies that focus on preventing disease and injuries.
OSDH is seeking a full time Medical Biller/Coder Coordinator providing support to The Community Health Administration Division. This is an unclassified position in state government located in Oklahoma City, OK. This position is responsible for entering and coding patient services into a computer system and generating invoices to be sent to patients. The position will coordinate with revenue and coder/biller positions in the county health departments to optimize billing opportunities and expand upon the current billing structure. Assists in planning, organizing, and directing agency, institution or facility business functions; follows appropriate accounting procedures, fiscal reporting requirements, and budget work program.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
•Educate clinicians on proper documentation/dictation requirements to support codes for max billing.
•Provide education and training to administrative staff for billing and reimbursement best practices.
•Assist with setting up templates for electronic health record (EHR) to ensure appropriate documentation for billing and reimbursement.
•Assist local administrative and clinic staff in creating the most efficient and effective processes for collection of documentation for billing and reimbursement.
•Ensure county health departments are reimbursed for all billable services.
•Convert dosages to billable units.
•Implement, maintain, and report on programs initiated by medical practice.
•Collect, post, and manage patient account payments.
•Prepare and review patient statements.
•Review delinquent accounts and call for collection purposes.
•Maintain strict confidentiality.
•Code patient services and enter into computer.
•Handle information regarding patient treatment, diagnosis, and related procedures to ensure proper coding.
•Awareness of all processes for claims submittal.
•Use computers to read and organize charts.
•Coordinate with Central Office reimbursement staff for claims that are accepted or denied.
•Investigate rejected claims and determine to see why denials are issued.
•Sort and file paperwork.
•Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•Knowledge of the principles of medical billing and coding; federal and state laws and regulations relating to medical billing. Able to maintain complex and confidential records; business communications including grammar, punctuation, and spelling; and business mathematics. Knowledge of coding systems, including Level 1 HCPCS and Level 2 HCPCS.
•Ability to plan, coordinate, and track multiple ongoing projects; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; communicate very effectively both orally and in writing; interpret, analyze, and resolve administrative matters in accordance with agency policy; exercise good judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions; and review and analyze financial data.
•Demonstrate very strong skills in organization and documentation, problem solving, and computer operation, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an office setting with climate-controlled settings and exposure to moderate noise level. While performing the duties of the job, employee is required to talk, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. This position requires long period of sitting and daily use of computer and phone. Applicants must be willing to perform all job-related travel associated with this position.
Applicant must have two years’ experience with medical coding.
Preferred Education and Experience
•Bachelor’s degree or Associates degree in a Health Information Management program.
•Certified CPT Coder.
