OSHA Safety Consultant II
This position is in the unclassified service.
Performs career level work planning and conducting workplace inspections. A safety consultant conducts safety inspections and provides consultation services to private employers to eliminate or reduce safety hazards in the workplace.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Individual is assigned duties for planning, organizing, conducting and maintaining occupational safety and health programs. Responsible for preparing and revising safety rules for the operation of equipment, for classes of work such as construction & maintenance. The safety consultant provides consultative safety inspections and program assistance that enables employers to comply with prescribed OSHA standards.
Work is generated by marketing and communicating the agency's services, through telephone, email and in-person presentations. Upon the request of employers, the safety consultant conducts on-site consultations that include identifying, assessing, and recommending corrective action for safety hazards. Consultations also include reviewing job safety and health programs and interviewing employees regarding their knowledge of safety rules and procedures. Work also includes meeting with employers to note conditions and programs that are not in compliance, and to discuss identified hazards, provide information, OSHA materials, and additional services to help correct deficiencies identified during the consultation. The consultant writes reports evaluating safety conditions at sites and recommending corrective procedures and timetables. The consultant will then follow up with employers to make sure all hazards have been corrected.
Applicants must be willing and able to perform all job-related travel normally associated with this position; be willing to work hours other than or regular shifts during emergency or high volume situations.
While performing the duties of this job, the employees are frequently required to stand, walk and reach; and talk and hear. Routinely, employees are required to sit; to manipulate or feel objects, tools or controls; climb (for extended distances) and/or balance; ascend/descend ladders and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Job performance may result in minimal noise exposure, the minimal possibility of chemical exposure and exposure to work environments where chemicals are present.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision with the ability to see defects during an inspection, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to differentiate between colors.
Position requires the employee to be able to wear suitable Personal Protective Equipment related to inspection type, work outdoors, to deal with all weather extremes, carry tool bags containing tools, handle tools required to facilitate inspection and, for some specific jobs, be able to carry 25 pounds up to 400 feet and be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Dependent on applicant’s place of residence, the proffer of permanent employment may be conditional upon relocation to the proper area. Failure of proper residency shall result in either a withdraw of employment, extended probationary period, or other adjustments as deemed necessary to best meet the needs of the Oklahoma Department of Labor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Level II - A bachelor’s degree in geology, safety, engineering or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of experience in industrial relations, safety, safety inspection, safety education, engineering or risk management for each year of the required education - plus two additional years of qualifying experience.
