Physical Evidence Technician I

Introduction

This position is located in the Criminalistics Services Division at the Northeast Regional Laboratory in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

MAJOR WORK DUTIES:
1. Receives physical evidence; logs information into computerized LIMS; routes to appropriate unit; prepares evidence for return to submitting agencies; returns evidence to agencies.
2. Maintains evidence rooms; secures custody and control, and completes chain of custody over evidence.
3. Receives and processes subpoenas; images laboratory file documentation; mails laboratory reports; maintains case files in NERL file system.
4. Receives contraband and hazardous substances for authorized destruction.
5. Performs receptionist duties at NERL; answers and routes calls at NERL; answers and routes calls at NERL; performs quality control (QC) duties including quarterly evidence inventory audit, evidence refrigerator/freezer temperature logs, etc.
 
Successful applicants must be willing to submit to a drug screen, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation (commissioned positions only), and a thorough background investigation.  Certain events automatically disqualify an applicant, such as, felony conviction; admission of an undetected crime that, if known, would have been a felony charge; failure to pay federal or state income tax; positive confirmed drug urine test; illegal use of a controlled substance within certain time frames.

BASIC PURPOSE

Positions within this job family are responsible for the receipt, documentation, storage, integrity, management, routing and disposition of all types of physical evidence from criminal investigations submitted to a forensic laboratory for scientific analysis.

LEVEL DESCRIPTORS

The Physical Evidence Technician job family consists of three levels which are distinguished based on the type and complexity of work, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others.

Level I:     
This is the basic level where incumbents perform routine clerical and semi-technical work, in a training status, involving the receipt, routing, storage and disposition of physical evidence, preparation of laboratory reports, and maintenance of laboratory files.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Level I:     
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of clerical experience involving typing or keyboarding; or an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting the completion of thirty semester hours from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
