Position:  Hatchery Technician

Division:  Fisheries

Location:  Durant State Fish Hatchery: Caddo, Bryan County, OK  - location of domicile must be approved by supervisor.

Salary:  $35,568.00 Yearly* 
*Salary commensurate with experience and education.

Summary of Essential Job Duties:
Under the supervision of a Hatchery Manager and / or Assistant Hatchery Manager, will provide manual and technical assistance to ensure efficient and successful culture of various species and number of fish.  Assist in brood stock collections and management, spawning, incubating, and hatching of eggs.  Feed and maintain fingerlings, and transfer and distribute various sizes and species of fish.  Requires handling and application of chemicals for proper maintenance of pond conditions (temperature, dissolved oxygen levels, ph. levels, plankton population levels, etc.), to help guard against parasite and disease problems, and provide pest and weed control.  Other duties include maintaining buildings and grounds and equipment in good condition and working order.  Collect, prepare and submit accurate data and reports on all phases of work.  Perform other duties as required by the Supervisor.  Work will occasionally require periods away from residence. 

Knowledge and Skills Required: 
• Must have knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of fish and wildlife management.
• Understanding of basic farming operations and equipment use and basic supervision principles.
• Must have skills in exercising good judgement in analyzing situations and making decisions.
• Lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds for a distance of 100 yards.
• Ability to push/pull a minimum of 50 pounds to hook up trailers, load boats, and various other equipment.
• Walk and job over rough terrain for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to swim.
• Work alone in remote areas.
• Endure various extremes of outdoor weather conditions.
• Work extended hours, weekends, and stay overnight out of town.
• Handle wild animals in live and dead condition, including field dressing wild game.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships, work independently, and be professional and courteous with the public and other agencies.
• Communicate clearly and effectively in public speaking situations and be able to express oneself clearly and concisely in writing.
• Operate and use small and hand held equipment and supplies. 
• Use personal computer and various office equipment.
• Operate and use field traps, survey gear, and lab equipment.
• Conduct day/night audio and visual surveys.

Job Duties:
Perform general hatchery maintenance work which includes equipment maintenance and minor repair, maintenance of grounds, pond repair, painting, minor road repair, the operation of simple farm machinery.

General fish culture duties which include feeding fish, fertilizing ponds, pond preparation, harvesting and moving fish, water quality analysis and collection and processing of accurate data.

May be assigned the responsibility of both in-state and out-of-state travel utilizing the fish transport units.

May be required to work at other stations as assigned.

Must be able to operate and maintain machinery, tools, instruments, or other equipment such as:  tractors and attachments, trucks, mowers, hoes, axes, rakes, picks, shovels, etc., seines and nets, carpenter tools, electric welders, pumps, various shop tools, water quality sensing equipment and p.c.

Education:  Minimum 2 years college to include course work in Aquatic Resource Management or closely related field. Four years experience in a Fisheries Conservation Technician position may substitute for education requirements. Applicant must attach a copy of transcript or documents showing two (2) years college training in fisheries management or closely related field.

Experience:  One year related experience is required. A total of five years’ experience is required in lieu of education requirement.  A completed Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management or related field may substitute for the experience requirement.

Knowledge and Skills: Must have knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of fish and wildlife management.  Understand basic farming operations and equipment use and basic supervision principles.  Must have skills in exercising good judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions.  Be proficient in use of computers and various software applications.  Have knowledge and competence in use of small hand tools and carpentry tools.
