The Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office is seeking a full-time Sexual Assault Kit Victim Advocate for the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI).
The position will be funded by the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Grant. The SAK Victim Advocate will work under the direction of the Chief of the Victims Services Unit within the Office of the Attorney General. The position will work directly with sexual assault victims while re-engaging them into the criminal justice system and acting as a liaison between the victim, local law enforcement and the local District Attorney. This position will provide quality care to victims of sexual assault and require empathy, compassion and be able to effectively communicate the elements of the criminal justice system to victims.
Essential Tasks of the Position:
• Work directly with the investigative agents, state law enforcement agencies, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI), District Attorney’s offices, the Native Alliance Against Violence (NAAV), the Oklahoma Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (OCADVSA), as well as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs), acting as a liaison for sexual assault victims throughout all phases of the system.
• Responsible for providing follow up to victims on assigned cases, crisis intervention and direct advocacy and making appropriate referrals for services within victims’ communities/cultures.
• Attend and participate in all Sexual Assault Forensic Task Force meetings and serve on subcommittees as assigned.
• Prepare materials and reports as requested by the Project Coordinator of the SAKI grant.
• Serve as lead in facilitating a comprehensive review of sexual assault victims’ rights to identify needed revisions and additions, and coordinate the development of improved victim notification processes across all parts of the criminal justice system as a result of a sexual assault crime.
• Prepare presentations for public education purposes to improve the response to sexual assault and encourage victims to access services including a forensic examination and advocacy/support.
• Build and maintain quality relationship with peers, state wide partners and other agencies.
• Maintain a high level of professional and ethical conduct towards victims and the community.
• Must adhere to all OAG policies and maintain required confidentiality of victim information and sensitive documents.
A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of experience for each year of the required degree. Experience and knowledge in the area of sexual violence is essential. An understanding of the court processes at the state level is preferred. Experience working under a federal grant project is preferred. Excellent organization and communication skills are needed. The ability to maintain a high level of security and confidentiality is crucial. Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and Access computer programs is preferred. A valid Oklahoma driver’s license is required. Some travel will be required with the possibility of overnight stays.
