Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the scientific analysis and testing of seeds and other materials through laboratory tests and other procedures to determine the germination ability, purity and content of a sample and compliance with established standards.

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

• Sets up laboratory equipment in preparation for sample examinations; assembles working samples of specific dimensions before testing; prepares substrata and chemicals used in testing; performs various tests and procedures including cold test, use of Tetrazolium to determine viability, phenol test and fluorescent test.
• Conducts purity and germination analyses in accordance with prescribed rules for seed testing and the Oklahoma Seed Law and rules and regulations; determines content of sample by standard quantitative and qualitative analysis, including percentage of weight of pure seed, crop seed, inert matter and weed seed.
• Calculates percentages for purity analyses and germination tests; calculates the number of noxious weeds per pound; prepares purity and germination reports.
• Evaluates results of the analysis to determine if standards are met; makes recommendations to supervisor if further action is warranted.
• Prepares and submits tests reports with recommendations; maintains records of results and recommendations.
• Maintains a clean and sanitary work area.

Level I:
Knowledge of seed laboratory procedures; of quantitative and qualitative sample analysis; of established rules and regulations in conducting purity and germination tests; of Oklahoma Seed Laws, rules and regulations and the Federal Seed Act; of seed classification; of botany; of basic mathematics; and of the maintenance of routine records and reports.  Ability is required to sort and manipulate small articles with speed and accuracy; and to operate scales, dividers, microscopes and other testing equipment.

Level II:
Those identified in Level I plus ability to provide training and guidance to other analysts; and to identify a large variety of seeds and noxious materials which affect the purity of various crop and other seeds.

Level III:
Those identified in Level II plus knowledge of supervisory principles and practices and the ability to perform complex microscopic examinations and analysis and to provide supervision and training to others.

This job family consists of three levels which are distinguished based on the level of complexity of assigned duties and the expertise required to complete assigned work.

Level I:
This is the basic level where employees are assigned entry-level duties related to the testing and analysis of seed products and related materials.  In this role duties are performed under close supervision in a training status to build their skills in identifying various types of seeds and other materials and in determining the content and quality of samples being tested in relation to established standards and procedures.

Level II:
This is the career level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities for performing a full range of laboratory tests and procedures at the full performance level in testing samples of seeds and other materials to determine the germination ability, purity and content of a sample and compliance with established standards.  Some responsibility may also be assigned for providing guidance and training to other analysts in conducting routine tests and other actions.
 
Level III:
This is the specialist level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities involving advanced level skilled work in seed testing and analysis as a Certified Seed Analyst and provide supervision to others in the completion of assigned activities in a seed laboratory.

Level I:
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of the completion of thirty semester hours of college coursework, including twelve hours in agriculture or botany, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of experience in laboratory testing and testing and analysis work.

Level II:
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level I plus one year of experience in seed testing and analysis work.

Level III:
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level II plus one additional year of experience in seed testing and analysis work and AOSA certification as a Certified Seed Analyst.
