Highway Safety Coordinator (#J32A)
$19.63-$35.99 hourly / $3,402.40-$6,237.73 monthly / $40,828.79-$74,852.78 annual


This position is responsible for directing and administering a statewide highway safety program.  This will include developing and implementing the annual highway safety plan and directing professional and clerical staff in developing and monitoring individual projects and components of the program.


  • Organizes, plans and administers a variety of highway safety programs.
  • Administers and controls the use of federal highway safety funds.
  • Coordinates the development and implementation of the annual highway safety plan.
  • Directs the preparation of the annual budget and  budget proposals to the legislature.
  • Coordinates and communicates program requirements with other divisions, agencies, federal officials, project directors, legislators, the media and the general public.
  • Represents the agency at national, professional and other meetings relating to the highway safety program.
  • Directs the preparation of administrative, fiscal and statistical reports.


Knowledge of public administration; of personnel and fiscal management; of transportation systems; of highway safety principles and practices; of statistical research methods; of program planning techniques; and of the principles of management and supervision.  Ability is required to plan, direct and review the work of others; to analyze complex situations and make responsible decisions; to coordinate safety programs and projects; to communicate effectively; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.


The Highway Safety Coordinator job family consists of only one level and the incumbent will be responsible for performing all essential functions involving directing and administering a statewide highway safety program.


Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree and five years of professional experience in business or public administration, including two years in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
