BASIC PURPOSE

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the planning, development and design of construction, renovation and repair projects within a state agency or institution or performs professional level work as a member of an architectural design team.  These projects will involve construction or building projects which have a total estimated cost which does not exceed the amount specified in 59 O.S. 1989 Section 46.3 or they may assist a licensed architect in the preparation of plans, specifications and designs for larger projects.  They will also inspect work in progress on minor projects and provide advice or assistance to contractors or employees in interpreting plans, specifications and blueprints.  They may supervise drafting technicians or other technical or clerical personnel.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts studies and makes recommendations concerning new construction, renovations or repairs; consults with users to identify needs and determines alternative courses of action; assists in coordinating and conducting prebid and preconstruction conferences. 
  • Develops and prepares designs, plans and specifications for minor projects; develops construction schedules and cost estimates; identifies needs for additional requirements such as roads, parking areas and water and sewer systems and provides estimated material and labor requirements to management; performs structural analysis and structural design work not requiring the attention of a structural engineer. 
  • Assists in the preparation of plans, specifications and blueprints on large projects; serves as in-house architect on smaller projects primarily involving renovation or repair of existing facilities. Performs on-site inspections of work-in-progress; advises construction superintendents, contractors or employees on construction requirements; interprets blueprints, plans or specifications as required. 
  • Researches new and existing designs, product data and technology for use in current or pending construction projects; develops computer programs and customizes computer aided drafting software for use in architectural design programs. 
  • Performs surveys, testing, measurements and other investigations at work sites. 
  • Assists in establishing future design programs, construction needs and budget requirements. 
  • Prepares required reports and maintains files on agency construction projects.

Knowledge of architectural design practices and principles; of architectural plans, specifications, designs, blueprints and cost estimates; of construction design; of materials used in construction; of computer aided design techniques; of the principles of effective communication; and of the principles of management.  Ability is required to analyze and prepare construction plans and specifications; to organize projects; to inspect the work of others; to collect and organize data; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to organize and conduct several projects simultaneously; and to effectively direct the work of others.

LEVEL DESCRIPTORS

The Construction Designer job family consists of only one level and incumbent employees are responsible for performing all functions related to the position. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor's degree in architecture, construction management, environmental design or a closely related field and one year of experience in architectural design, architectural engineering, construction management or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
