BASIC PURPOSE

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the operation of a motor vehicle to transport a variety of items, materials and/or personnel.  This includes routine work involving the operation of vehicles such as a passenger car, station wagon, pick-up truck up to one ton, panel truck or van to transport or haul a variety of items, deliver messages, perform errands or transport passengers.  Incumbents work under close supervision and assigned tasks are clearly defined.
 

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operates a motor vehicle picking up and delivering such items as mail, laundry, medicine specimens, small parts and equipment, milk or other cargo; hauls livestock, grain, hay, garbage, trash and other materials; transports state officials, employees and clients; delivers messages and performs various errands. 
  • Performs associated clerical and record keeping tasks; loads and performs necessary handling operations in connection with cargo being hauled. 
  • Makes minor adjustments and emergency repairs; keeps vehicles clean and serviceable. 
  • Checks oil and fluid levels as appropriate.
     

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge of the techniques of safe vehicle operation; of traffic laws and regulations; and of CPR and first aid techniques.  Skill is required to operate light vehicles; and to lift or handle cargo.

The Light Vehicle Driver job family consists of only one level and incumbent employees are responsible for performing all functions related to the position to which assigned.

Education and Experience requirements are none.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver's license at time of appointment.

 

Upon a conditional offer of employment, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services applicants must submit to a physical examination and shall meet the physical examination requirements of lifting/carrying 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently and able to push and pull a maximum force of 50 pounds.
