BASIC PURPOSE

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the design and construction of dioramic exhibits and interpretive settings for museums, historic sites, and travel and tourism promotional programs.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Constructs and paints dioramic displays in both scale and perspective. 
  • Assists and prepares detailed designs of proposed exhibit plans; cuts display panels with power tools, mixes and brushes or sprays color coats; lays out lettering. 
  • Performs basic research into the background of historical items. 
  • Maintains graphic equipment and supplies. 
  • Installs completed exhibits in show cases.  
  • Travels to museums and exhibit sites across the state; makes an on-site survey of the exhibit program. 
  • Designs and sketches plans for exhibits; prepares plans and specifications for implementation; determines and prepares printing and graphic reproduction techniques for projects; executes design of exhibits. 
  • Coordinates with other personnel regarding the implementation and installation of exhibits; coordinates with printers and vendors to determine appropriate production requirements. 
  •   Assists in training programs to train on-site personnel in proper exhibit techniques.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Level I :                                    
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions; of basic research methods; of public relations principles; of the methods, techniques and tools used in the construction of dioramic exhibits; and of the techniques used in mixing paint and matching colors.  Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and skill is required to use tools and equipment required on the job. 
  
Level II:                                  
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions; of the methods, techniques and tools used in the preparation of dioramic exhibits; of public relations principles; of the techniques used in mixing paint and matching color; of power tools; and of basic research methods.  Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally, in writing and graphically. 

Level III :                                 
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions; of the principles of fundamental design, perspective and composition of interpretive exhibits; of protective exhibit techniques, including lighting and security; of educational exhibit and labeling procedures and of basic research methods.  Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; in expressing ideas clearly and concisely, orally, in writing and graphically; and to train personnel. 
 

LEVEL DESCRIPTORS

The Exhibit Design Specialist job family consists of three levels which are distinguished based on the complexity of the work assigned and the level of expertise required to perform assigned duties.

Level I :                               
At this level employees are assigned responsibilities involving technical work in the design, construction and maintenance of historical dioramic exhibits.  This includes constructing and painting dioramic displays in both scale and perspective; assisting in preparing detailed designs of proposed exhibit plans; cutting display panels with power tools; and mixing and brushing or spraying color coats.  They will also perform basic background research of historical exhibits to be constructed, maintain graphic equipment and supplies, and install completed exhibits in show cases. 
  
Level II:                                   
At this level employees are assigned responsibilities involving planning, designing and constructing interpretive settings for historical exhibits, including three-dimensional settings, basic background research and preparing detailed designs of proposed exhibit plans. 
 
Level III:                       
At this level employees provide consultant services for historical interpretation programs for museum and historic sites, or for travel-related and tourism and recreational promotional programs.  This includes traveling to museums and exhibit sites across the state, making on-site surveys of the exhibit program.  They will also design and sketch plans for exhibits; prepare plans and specifications for implementation; prepare printing and graphic reproduction techniques for projects; coordinate with curatorial and other on-site personnel and vendors; and assist in training programs to train on-site personnel in proper exhibit techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Level I:                                    
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of successful completion of two college level courses in commercial art, drafting or a closely related field; or one year of experience in drafting, designing or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Level II:                        
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of completion of two college level courses in commercial art, drafting or a closely related field and three years of experience in drafting, designing or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Level III:                              
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree in art, design or a closely related field and four years of experience in exhibit design, or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Some positions may require possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license at the time of appointment.
