BASIC PURPOSE

Positions in this family are responsible for assisting with gathering and tracking geographical information and for developing and maintaining the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases and data sets.  This includes reading and interpreting source documents and entering required data into the GIS.  These individuals will also produce maps and provide technical assistance to staff and customers.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS

The functions performed within this job family will vary by level and organization, but may include the following:
• Operates computer workstation to create and update maps using appropriate software as data is received relative to various geographical matters and projects.
• Handles data entry and other routine tasks as assigned by supervisor.
• Conducts mapping research in the field and in the office to resolve conflicting information and ensure the accuracy of the data; verifies map information and makes changes as deemed appropriate according to needs of the project.
• Creates and modifies maps using GIS/CADD software as directed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Level I:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities requirements at this level include knowledge of the symbols and terminology used in conveying geographical information; of GIS and CADD software; of digitizing and data manipulation procedures for geographic information systems; of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; and of database design.  Ability is required to gather mapping information in the field using current equipment; to read and use different types of maps: to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; and to establish and maintain effective, professional working relationships with others.

Level II:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level I plus the ability to work independently.

Level III:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level II.

 

LEVEL DESCRIPTORS

Level I:
This is the basic level of this job family where employees are assigned duties and responsibilities in a routine, entry-level status to build their skills in the performance of GIS-related tasks.  Individuals will work under direct supervision to meet the needs of projects as assigned.

Level II:
This is the career level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities at the full performance level and work with some independence.

Level III:
This is the specialist level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities at the advanced level and perform tasks with greater independence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Level I:
Education and Experience requirements at this level consists of an associate’s degree in geographic information systems (GIS), geography, geology, cartography, archaeology, anthropology, natural resources, environmental science, engineering, computer science, or a closely related field or equivalent course work at a technical or vocational school, in geographic information systems (GIS), geography, geology, cartography, archaeology, anthropology, natural resources, environmental science, engineering, computer science, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of technical experience in GIS systems work for each year of the required education.

Level II:
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level I plus one additional year of technical experience in GIS systems work.

Level III:
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level II plus one additional year of technical experience in GIS systems work.
