Introduction

MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.

Paid Interns

Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $18.00 per hour. They do not receive benefits or paid days off.

Required Documents:

  • Letter of recommendation from a class instructor, professor, or Internship Coordinator from current school or university.
  • Cover letter stating interest in position.
  • Resume.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Enrollment in a degree-seeking program in an accredited college or university.
  • Permanent residency within the territorial boundaries of the MWRD (students may attend school outside the territorial boundaries).
  • You must be a citizen or national of the United States, or an individual who is otherwise legally authorized to work in the United States.

Description:

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is seeking an intern to serve in the Engineering Department. The intern will be exposed to coordination of underground utility protection through the JULIE (Joint Utility  Locating Information for Excavators) and Chicago 811 (DIGGER) programs and review of contract plans for impacts to MWRD underground facilities. The intern will learn how to read underground utility plans, especially concerning wastewater, as well as gain familiarization with roadway and other infrastructure design plans. The intern will also learn skills to interact with response software and will have direct contact with requestors by email, fax and phone. There will be exposure to other projects and procedures when possible.

Rate of Pay:

This is a paid internship at $18.00/hr.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and in a group setting

Educational Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program majoring in civil engineering but other engineering disciplines are acceptable.
