MWRD's Internship Program offers paid internship positions. While the main focus is on wastewater management, there are opportunities to gain knowledge and practical experience in a wide range of functions in each department.
Paid interns are limited to 119 working days per calendar year and receive $15.00 per hour. They do not receive benefits or paid days off.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago is in search of a current college student seeking an internship opportunity in the Engineering Department. While working under the direction of a Principal Civil Engineer, the prospective intern will be trained on Green Infrastructure (GI) technologies and gain experience administering GI projects, performing, and evaluating field inspections, and calculating project metrics. The intern will also gain experience administering GI projects, including performing and evaluating post construction inspections and cataloging GI project applications submitted to the District. By the conclusion of this internship, the prospective intern should be able to articulate how the assigned projects of the Engineering Department contribute to the changing needs of the District based on the vast community that we serve.
Rate of Pay:
This is a paid internship at $15.00/hr.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
Applicants must have a current residence in Cook County, IL; be a citizen or national of the U.S., an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence, or an individual otherwise legally authorized to work in the U.S.; and must obtain a referral letter from current school’s class instructor or Internship Coordinator.
Applicants must be a current graduate or undergraduate student seeking a degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or a geography student proficient in GIS. AutoCAD or GIS experience preferred, but not required. Familiarity with construction plans desired, but not required.
Applicable classes include Hydrology, Site Planning, Cartography, Urban Planning, Fluid Dynamics, Urban Stormwater Engineering, Ecology.
