Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

Under supervision, performs skilled manual work in the installation, modification, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of piping systems and associated appurtenances for steam, condensate, hot water associated with heating systems, process water, fuel oil, gas, air and process chemicals, and directs the work of assigned Pipefitters.

• Performs first-line supervision of assigned Pipefitters.  Plans, schedules, directs and inspects the work of subordinates according to the approved instructions, standards, plans and specifications of the job.
• Makes estimates of material and labor required for work; checks material and equipment received for projects; requisitions material, supplies, tools and equipment required for the work and maintains accurate records of time spent on jobs.
• Bends, cuts, fits, threads, solders, brazes, cements and assembles piping systems of all materials and types; welds and cuts metals by gas or electric arc process. 
• Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains piping, coils, steam traps and controls associated with HVAC systems. 
• Installs, maintains, cleans and repairs pipeline strainers, pressure regulating, reducing and relief valves, temperature regulating valves, temperature and pressure gauges and other appurtenances on piping systems associated with water reclamation plant process equipment.
• Installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains pneumatic process control systems. 

• Is responsible for the care and custody of all the tools of the trade in performing pipefitting work.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions and in confined space environments throughout the plant facility, and collection systems.

• Considerable knowledge in the methods and materials necessary to install and maintain piping systems of all materials and types.
• Considerable knowledge of pneumatic process control and HVAC systems. 
• Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work. 
• Ability to use an oxyacetylene torch.
• Ability to do electric arc welding, soldering and brazing.
• Ability to interpret and work from sketches and blueprints. 
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. 
• Ability to communicate well orally and in writing in the dissemination of information and instructions.
• Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment of the trade.
• Skill in the operation of computers necessary to plan, schedule, and coordinate work at several work locations, and perform record keeping and communication reports in a manner conducive to the best possible use of District resources.
