General Statement

Performs skilled manual work in connection with the installation, maintenance and repair of all types of insulation or protective covering for piping, pipe fittings, valves, mechanical equipment and machinery.

  • Performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of all types of insulation or protective covering for piping, pipe fittings, valves, boilers, stoves, furnaces, mechanical equipment and machinery.
  • Mixes or otherwise prepares insulation material; cuts, fits and applies materials as required. 
  • Wraps insulation with paper and canvas; pastes or sews canvas in place; bands pipe covering with metal wire or straps.
  • Conducts work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.
  • Erects and dismantles ladders and scaffolds as required.

Other Job Functions

  • Is responsible for the custody and care of all tools of the trade in performing pipecovering work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions and in confined space environments throughout the plant facility, and collection systems.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the types and characteristics of insulating material and other protective coatings used on machinery, equipment and appurtenances.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work, especially those related to handling and disposal of asbestos containing materials.  
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment of the trade.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in pipe covering, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
