General Statement

Under supervision, operates and maintains light and heavy mobile equipment.

  • Operates mobile equipment such as locomotives, cranes, derricks, hoists, backhoes, brown bears, road graders, concrete mixers, large air compressors, large pumps, sludge handling and stripping machines.
  • Operates bulldozers and track & wheeloaders in the performance of excavation, backfill, loading, grading, cleaning roads and removing snow from plant premises.
  • When assigned to the debris boat, operates a crane in the removal of trees, wood, trash and other material from various navigable waterways.
  • Conducts work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.

Other Job Functions

  • Keeps equipment in a clean, lubricated and workable condition; makes field repairs and adjustments and reports needed repairs and faulty operation of the equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics, adaptabilities and maintenance needs of heavy power driven equipment such as cranes, hoists, excavators, road graders and bulldozers.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Absolute Requirements

Possession of a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with an endorsement for vehicles with air brakes.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and four years of experience in the operation and maintenance of light and heavy mobile equipment, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
