General Statement

Under supervision, performs skilled manual work in connection with the application of surface finishes or protective coatings to building interiors and exteriors, bridges and other structures, furniture, machinery and equipment.

  • Under supervision, performs skilled manual work in the application of surface finishes or protective coatings to building interiors and exteriors, other structures, furniture, machinery and equipment.  
  • Cleans and prepares surfaces for the application of paint, stain, varnish or other finish. 
  • Removes old paint or varnish from surfaces.  
  •  Mixes and properly matches colors of paint or other coatings, and applies surface finishes with hand brush, spray machine, air gun or other means.
  • Conducts work in a safe manner and in accordance with established safety rules and practices.

Other Job Functions

  • Is responsible for the custody and care of all tools and equipment of the trade in performing painting work. 
  • Does lettering and stenciling; stripes pavements; refinishes furniture and does glazing work.
  • Erects or dismantles ladders and scaffolding, as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of the painting and glazing trades.
  • Considerable knowledge of the characteristics, uses, limitations and adaptability of a wide variety of paints, stains, varnishes and similar interior and exterior finishes.  
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment of the trade. 
  • Ability to mix paints and match colors.
  • Ability to use hand brush, spray machine and air gun.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and completion of an approved apprentice training program in painting, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Substitution

Additional experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
