Assistant Electrical Engineer (#20003451)


General Statement

Under immediate supervision, performs entry level electrical engineering work in electrical power and lighting systems design; construction inspection and scheduling review; and preparation of electrical estimates. Performs field inspections of electrical installations or assists in supervision of electrical equipment maintenance.

  • Plans, designs and prepares conduit layouts, single line, schematic, and wiring diagrams for electrical power and lighting systems; prepares simple electrical calculations on short circuits, wire sizes, loads and electrical conditions.
  • Reviews, modifies and prepares contract drawings using a computer aided design system; utilizes computer programs and data processing.
  • Assists in the preparation of electrical estimates for design, repair and construction.
  • Assists resident engineer on engineering projects; checks submittals and drawings for accuracy and conformity to District standards; checks installation of electrical power and lighting systems against plans and specifications.
  • Assists in maintaining electrical equipment in wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations and other outlying facilities; investigates and checks system and equipment conditions; assists in the adjustment or revision of electrical equipment.
  • Maintains, reviews and analyzes records of electrical work from construction through operation; prepares daily and monthly operating records and reports.
  • Maintains various records, prepares memoranda, correspondence, reports, specifications and other documents as required.

Other Job Functions

  • Assists in the coordination of electrical engineering projects; confers with other sections and department personnel to determine project requirements and effective procedure.
  • Reviews permit applications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

Typical office environment.  May use standard office equipment and computer terminals.  May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors.  May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system. May involve working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities and heavy equipment, and may require exposure to a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of computerized control and instrumentation systems for industrial processes.
  • Some knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of electrical engineering.
  • Some knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information in electrical engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of the application and interpretation of relevant electrical codes.
  • Ability to prepare conduit layouts, single line, schematic and wiring diagrams for electrical power and lighting systems.
  • Ability to understand and interpret detailed construction schedules prepared by the critical path method.
  • Ability to use various computer applications, such as database managers, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Ability to prepare electrical estimates for design and construction.
  • Ability to check electrical installations against plans and specifications.
  • Ability to apply engineering formulas to routine mathematical equations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in electrical engineering.

Promotional Requirement

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. 
  • Civil service status as an Engineer Trainee; or one year of service with the District as a Treatment Plant Operator I or Engineering Technician IV.
  • Civil service status as a Treatment Plant Operator I or Engineering Technician IV.
