General Statement

Under general supervision, assigns, supervises and reviews work of Engineering Draftsmen. Administers computer aided drafting and design (CADD) systems, operates their control programs, manages related digital information, and provides for systematic archiving of all CADD work products. Reviews CADD system performance to maximize its operational availability and to improve its operating efficiency. Develops, updates, and enforces CADD standards.

  • Manages, schedules, reviews and assigns the work of Engineering Draftsmen.
  • Installs, configures, customizes and maintains CADD hardware and software.  Configures and operates computers, operating system software, and peripheral equipment such as plotters and scanners.
  • Works with the Information Technology Department to maintain integrity of data files and security of the computer aided drafting and design system.
  • Develops and administers the CADD file server and windows network as it relates to CADD.
  • Coordinates with the Information Technology Department, as needed, for installation and configuration needed to support CADD hardware and software.
  • Develops and implements District CADD drafting standards, enhances productivity through application of advanced CADD techniques and tools, answers users' questions, solves problems, plans and provides for user training.
  • Makes recommendations and evaluations for purchase of CADD hardware, software, and CADD training. Attends CADD-related meetings, and provides related administrative activities needed to support the CADD system and its users.
  • Stays current with CADD technology and changing digital information technology.
  • Participates in project meetings to represent the drafting group.

Other Job Functions

  • Assures acquisition of approved CADD-related equipment and supplies.
  • Develops specific plans for future enhancement and improvement of the CADD system and related design software.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

Typical office environment.  Use standard office equipment and computer workstations and plotters.  Work also includes visiting areas where hard hat, gloves, ear protection, safety glasses, and/or safety shoes may be required.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the operation and administration of computer aided drafting and design systems and windows network environment needed to support CADD.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of engineering drafting and computer aided drafting and design in both two-dimensions and three-dimensions.
  • Thorough knowledge of the latest version of the CADD software utilized by the District to fully utilize techniques and tools for work efficiency, drawing accuracy, generation of information, and manipulation and management of digital data.
  • Advanced understanding of the drafting approach for engineered structures, sewers, electrical facilities, civil works, mechanical equipment, process and instrumentation flow diagrams, and architectural details.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage and schedule workload.
  • Ability to supervise draftsmen.
  • Ability to instruct and train CADD users.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university majoring in engineering, computer science, or a closely-related field.  Three years of CADD experience in support of professional architects or engineers and one year of experience in the administration of computer aided drafting and design (CADD) systems.

Promotional Requirement

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a closely related field.
  • Two years of experience with the District as an Engineering Draftsman III.
  • Civil service status as an Engineering Draftsman III.
