By bringing a multidisciplinary team together to examine
circumstances of stillbirths and infant deaths and to identify prevention
measures, the Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) is a community-based process
designed to improve the health and well-being of birthing persons, infants, and
families.
Purpose
The FIMR Case Abstractor reviews and summarizes information from medical records for the Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) process.
As this is a grant-funded position, the role and job functions are subject to the availability of grant funding and grant guidelines.

Essential Functions
Data Collection and Reporting
- Retrieve, analyze, and abstract relevant patient data from multiple clinical and social sources for in-depth analyzes into designated systems.
- Collect and document clinical data according to program and registry standards, ensuring accurate, complete, and timely data entry into the database.
- Develop and generate reports to assist healthcare providers in understanding key data and statistics.
- Identify and recommend opportunities to streamline, improve documentation, and enhance data collection.
- Communicate clearly about data documentation needs to ensure accuracy and reliability in reporting.
- Serve as a resource on FIMR measures, data elements and reporting standards for internal and external stakeholders.
FIMR Reporting and Participation
- Prepare and present case summaries, findings and data analyses at FIMR case review meetings.
- Participate in case review meetings, community coalitions, task forces, and advisory committees related to FIMR activities.
- Collaborate with the Program Coordinator and review teams to ensure comprehensive case analysis and quality improvement initiatives.

Conditions of Employment
- Position requires working variable hours as dictated by departmental needs, including occasional evenings and weekends.
- Required to carry a mobile device during working hours
- Position requires travel to various sites throughout the City of Milwaukee.
- May be required to respond to an emergency or a broad-impact event.
- Pre-Employment Vaccination and Screening Requirements:
- Annual TB Test
- Annual Covid-19 and Influenza vaccinations
- Pre-employment immunity verification required for MMR,
Varicella, and Hepatitis B
- If not immune, vaccination or an approved exemption is required.
- Vaccination series only needs to be done once.
Minimum Requirements
- Associate Degree in Nursing, Medical Assisting, or a closely-related field from an accredited college or university.
- Four years of experience working in or supporting Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Neonatology, and/or Perinatology, or performing work closely related to the duties of the position, including medical records review, chart review and abstracting, or clinical data interpretation.
- Ability to travel independently throughout Milwaukee, either by transit, bicycle, or automobile
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered; however, two years of clinical experience are required and cannot be substituted for education.

Desirable Qualifications
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN), or other licensed clinician OR allied health professional certification with experience in clinical data interpretation, quality assurance, documentation and chart reviews.
- Experience submitting requests for medical records from providers or from medical institutions.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
Technical
- Knowledge of abstracting and coding practices in health data collection.
- Ability to identify, extract, and interpret relevant information from complex medical records.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and clinical concepts specifically related to obstetric, neonatal, and pediatric care.
- Knowledge of prenatal, perinatal, and infant care documentation.
- Knowledge of causes and contributing factors of fetal and infant mortality.
- Knowledge of FIMR data elements, national standards, and reporting protocols.
- Knowledge of and proficiency with medical records systems, health information documentation standards, and electronic health record (EHR) systems.
- Knowledge of database systems and data integrity principles.
- Ability to interpret clinical details and identify contributing factors to fetal or infant deaths.
- Competency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and data management software.
Interpersonal and Communication
- Verbal communication skills to present findings at FIMR meetings and to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong written communication skills to prepare clear and concise case summaries.
- Ability to work effectively with hospital staff, public health personnel, and social services agencies.
- Diplomacy and professionalism when handling sensitive or confidential information.
- Exemplary cultural awareness and sensitivity.
- Ability to work cooperatively and fairly with people whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.

Current Salary
The current salary range (Pay Range 2IN) is $78,021-$89,460 annually and the residency incentive salary for City of Milwaukee residents is $81,142-$93,038 annually. Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.
