Purpose

The Library Copy Cataloging Specialist catalogs and classifies library resources and maintains standardized bibliographic access points to optimize their discovery via the shared library catalog.

Essential Functions

Data Management

  • Catalog and classify library resources for the Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) and Milwaukee County Federated Library System (MCFLS) member libraries, using established bibliographic records and internal cataloging standards.
  • Review, correct, and add bibliographic records.
  • In the MCFLS database, Sierra Integrated Library System, monitor and evaluate the use of bibliographic access points using internal guidelines.
  • Build knowledge of cataloging practices and trends through continued education and training.

Library Support

  • Assist leadership and other cataloging staff in gathering data, developing policies, procedures, optimizing work-flows.
  • Participate in meetings and communication with MCFLS and member libraries.
  • Train MPL and member library staff on bibliographic record tasks.

Conditions of Employment

The Library Copy Cataloging Specialist must be willing and able to do the following:

  • Perform physical activities in the work environment that require agility, including walking and standing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, balancing, pushing, and pulling.

Position is funded 90% through revenue offset from the Milwaukee County Federated Library System.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Four years of experience in library services, including one year in library technical services.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered. However, there is no substitution for the one year of library technical service experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Understanding of the organization of knowledge in a library setting, including the concept of collocation, the Dewey Decimal Classification System, and Library of Congress Subject Headings.
  • Ability to create new and update existing bibliographic and item records.
  • Ability to use computer tools for data management, including integrated library system (ILS), internal electronic files and databases, reporting tools, and Microsoft Office suite.

Communication & Interpersonal

  • Written communication skill to create clear and concise business communications such as policies, reports, procedures, and plans, using correct English grammatical and punctuation conventions.
  • Ability to work effectively with City managers and staff, elected officials, community groups, and residents from all socioeconomic, educational, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to solve problems.
  • Verbal communication skill to ensure the accuracy of information conveyed and to explain complex concepts to individuals with varying degrees of understanding.
  • Ability to work effectively with City managers and staff, elected officials, community groups, and residents from all socioeconomic, educational, and cultural backgrounds.

Current Salary

The current salary range (Pay Range 5GN) is $53,351 - $66,689 annually, and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $54,951-$68,690 annually. Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written or performance test, a structured interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
