The Department of Public Works-Milwaukee Water Works
(DPW-MWW) encourages high school juniors who have fully completed their sophomore year at the time of application period close to apply for this exciting youth apprenticeship program,
which may lead to full-time employment as an Industrial Machine Repair
Mechanic.
The goal of the Youth Apprenticeship Program is to develop a
talent pipeline for the Milwaukee Water Works (MWW).

Purpose
Under the guidance and direction of Milwaukee Water Works (MWW) managers and supervisors, the Youth Apprentice performs minor maintenance repairs to all water system equipment and assists and supports machine repair staff.

Machine Repair Mechanic promotional series. ~
Essential Functions
- Assist with the repair of all mechanical equipment systemwide, including valves, compressors, chemical feed equipment, distribution system storage facilities, water filtration equipment, and pumps.
- Participate in and complete high school courses offered by the Department of Workforce Development-Youth Apprenticeship Program (DWD-YAP) related to the manufacturing/mechanical fields.
- Weld and fabricate guards, rails, and other necessary components for the water plants.
- Perform custodial work and snow removal duties.
- Assist other plant personnel with basic maintenance tasks.

Conditions of Employment
The Youth Apprentice must be willing and able to do the
following:
- Work 15-20 hours per week during the school year.
- Have access to reliable transportation to report on time at the work location for the assigned work shift.
- Perform custodial work and snow removal duties.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety shoes, glasses, and hearing protection.
- Enter and work in confined spaces and wear related safety equipment.
- Work near hazardous chemicals, in all weather conditions, and with high noise levels.
- Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for extended periods.
Minimum Requirements
- Enrollment status in September 2025 as a junior in
high school at the time of application period close (July 18, 2025).
NOTE 1: Candidates must be on track to graduate; verification will be requested from the candidate’s High School.
NOTE 2: Candidates selected for the MWW Apprentice program are required to participate in the DWD-YAP. For more information about the DWD-YAP, see this LINK: https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/apprenticeship/ya/applicants.htm - Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of appointment.
- A valid government-issued state identification card or a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment. This is required to obtain security clearance within the MWW facilities.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
Technical:
- Ability to learn and use a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Ability to learn and apply mechanical concepts.
- Ability to learn safety principles and work safely and effectively in a field environment.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics to perform job-related calculations and to interpret mechanical drawings.
- Ability to read and interpret job-related documents.
- Ability to complete the required Youth Apprenticeship Program educational and training components.
Organizational/Communication/Interpersonal:
- Ability to take direction and follow through accurately and efficiently.
- Ability to stay organized and complete tasks promptly.
- Ability to exhibit a positive attitude.

Current Salary
The current wage rate (Pay Range 9MN) is $15.92 per
hour and the resident incentive rate for City of Milwaukee residents
is $16.40 per hour.
Selection Process
THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job-related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of education, experience, and/or responses to supplemental questions, a written or performance test, a structured interview, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations. Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
INITIAL FILING DATE - The selection process will be held as
soon as practical after the deadline listed above. Receipt of applications may

recruitment may continue until the City's needs have been met. Qualified
