Purpose

The Office of Community Wellness and Safety provides direction and oversight for City efforts to reduce risk of violence through partnerships with governmental, non-profit, neighborhood, and faith organizations.  Further information about the Office of Community Wellness and Safety can be found here: https://city.milwaukee.gov/doa/Services-and-Programs/staysafe.

The Position 

The Marketing and Communications Coordinator creates, executes and monitors the social media and digital marketing strategies of the Office of Community Wellness and Safety.

Essential Functions

Marketing and Communication Coordination

  • Work directly with the Community Wellness and Safety Director to develop content strategies for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Instagram Stories, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube and other emerging social media platforms; ensure that content promotes interaction, increases engagement, and encourages audience participation.
  • Act as a producer on video shoots for content and provide feedback on all creative assets.
  • Craft and pitch positive stories regarding the work of the Office of Community Safety and Wellness to local and national publications.
  • Create and execute event promotion strategies; assist in developing an annual communications plan.
  • Participate in training and professional development related to public relations, media, marketing, and communications.

Media and Community Relations

  • Engage with communities across all social channels in a timely manner.
  • Field and respond to media requests.
  • Address community inquires and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Represent the Office of Community Wellness and Safety at public forums, media events and within committees and workgroups related to grant activities.

Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to work variable hours as dictated by departmental needs, including occasional evenings and weekends.        
  • Ability to travel to various sites throughout the City of Milwaukee.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  2. One year of progressively responsible experience in journalism, marketing, communications, media or public relations, including strategic communications and social media.
  3. Valid driver’s license and access to a properly insured vehicle at the time of hire OR the ability to efficiently navigate public transportation to travel to work locations. Mileage reimbursement may be paid pursuant to Section 150-183 of the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical:

  • Ability to develop and implement digital media strategies. 
  • Superior written and visual communication skills to prepare compelling, audience-appropriate digital content, marketing materials, reports and correspondence. 
  • Expert-level skill in proofreading to ensure that documents and digital content are error-free.
  • Knowledge of digital marketing across key channels, including digital apps, email, .com, social and paid media.
  • Knowledge of graphic arts and design principles.
  • Knowledge of marketing and promotion practices.
  • Knowledge of graphics for the web, including the use of appropriate file formats.
  • Skill in the operation of desktop workstations.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, strategies, and best practices.
  • Ability to identify effective design, layout, and format for visual communications.
  • Ability to effectively utilize multiple software applications, including Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and PowerPoint Ability.
  • Ability to develop creative, imaginative, and original marking and communications ideas. 
  • Skill in the planning, layout, graphic design, creation, and maintenance of web sites using Content Management System (CMS) and HyperText Markup Language (HTML).
  • Skill in the creation of electronic presentations using PowerPoint and Flash for educational, public service and outreach purposes.
  • Willingness to stay abreast of leading-edge technologies and practices in graphic design.
  • Ability to read and interpret job-related materials, including scientific and technical journals.

Interpersonal and Communication:

  • Verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with the media, business associations, academia, community groups, other governmental agencies and residents. 
  • Presentation skills to confidently represent the office before various audiences, large and small.
  • Ability to build relationships with managers, colleagues, staff, elected officials, news reporters, and the public. 
  • Ability to prepare written reports, correspondence, and media materials to clearly and concisely communicate information.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with people whose backgrounds may differ from one’s own.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and accomplish projects, manage multiple assignments simultaneously, meet deadlines, and manage shifting priorities.

Current Salary

The current annual salary range (2FX) for City of Milwaukee is $51,649-$71,754 and the residency incentive annual salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $53,198-$73,907.  Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.
