Purpose
The Ironworker constructs, fabricates, maintains and repairs
structural steel members and ironwork on bridges, viaducts, public buildings,
fencing and other structures. The Ironworker also performs maintenance on the
machinery and other components of movable bridges.
Essential Functions
Structural Welding and Maintenance
·
Construct, fabricate, maintain and repair structural steel members
and ironwork on bridges, viaducts, public buildings, and other structures,
including required scaffold and riggings.
·
Weld and utilize a cutting torch on the steel of bridges, buildings,
and other structures.
·
Read and interpret blueprints and engineering plans to
fabricate and install steel beams, columns, bridge railings, and other
structural components.
·
Utilize electric and air driven tools for structural steel
construction and repair.
·
Repair and maintain bridge machinery, pumps, brakes, center locks,
cables, sheaves and other equipment.
·
Erect and work from scaffolding, riggings, and various lifts
required for structural repairs on bridges, viaducts, buildings and other
structures.
Technical Development and Safety
·
Participate in technical development activities to keep current
with industry relevant practices and standards in welding and fabricating.
·
Adhere to all federal, state, departmental, and welding industry
safety laws, rules, practices, and procedures.

Conditions of Employment

Must be able to perform physical activities in the work
environment that require agility, including ascending or
descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps or poles; walking and
standing, crawling, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, balancing,
pushing and pulling.

Must be able to work at heights in excess of 200 feet.
·
Must be able to perform heavy physical work, exerting up to
100 lbs. of force occasionally and lifting and moving objects weighing 50
lbs. frequently.
·
Must be able to withstand prolonged exposure to variable and
extreme weather conditions including rain, wind, excessive heat, intense cold
and snow.
·
Must be able to tolerate vibrating work conditions and noise.
·
Must be able to work in confined spaces.
·
Must be able to work in proximity to moving mechanical parts.
·
Must wear and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) standard
to ironworking, including the use of common and specialized safety equipment
(i.e. shoes, gloves, glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, welding jacket,
welding hood, harness, protective suits and the use of a respirator), as
required.
·
Must
understand erection and rigging practices.
·
Must wear and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) standard
to ironworking, including the use of common and specialized safety equipment
(i.e. shoes, gloves, glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, welding jacket,
welding hood, harness, protective suits and the use of a respirator), as
required.

Minimum Requirements
Ironworker
3
1.
Three years of professional welding experience.
Ironworker
4
1.
Four years of professional welding experience.
All
levels
1.
Valid class driver’s license at the time of appointment and throughout
employment.
2.
American Welding Society D1.1 and D1.5 Examination/Certification
at the time of application, throughout the selection process and throughout
employment.
3.
State of Wisconsin Welding Certification at the time of
application, throughout the selection process and throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics
Technical
·
Knowledge of basic ironworker practices and terminology.
·
Knowledge of and ability to use job-related ironworker tools
and equipment.
·
Knowledge of and ability to use shop fabrication tools and
equipment.
·
Knowledge of and ability to use tools and equipment for
constructing steel structures such as welding, riveting, and bolting.
·
Knowledge of and ability to operate bridge machinery and related
equipment.
·
Knowledge of and ability to erect scaffolding and rigging,
including the ability to tie knots.
·
Knowledge of and ability to apply safety principles and practices
as they apply to all components of this job.
·
Ability to read, understand and interpret engineering plans,
blueprints and layout for fabrication.
·
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.

Current Salary
Ironworker 3
The current starting salary (Pay range 7IN)
is $75,361-$95,721 annually, and
the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $77,622-$98,593 annually.
Ironworker 4
The current starting salary Pay range 7JN) is $83,735-$102,785 annually, and the resident
incentive salary range for the city of Milwaukee is $86,247-$105,869.
Appointment above the minimum is possible, based upon level of
experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

Selection Process
THE SELECTION PROCESS will
be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation
of education, experience, and/or responses to supplemental questions; a written
or performance test, a structured interview, or other assessment methods. The
Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most
qualified candidates to structured interviews and performance examinations.
Structured interviews may include written exercises. Selection process
component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
