The Department of Public Works-Milwaukee Water Works (DPW-MWW) encourages current sophomore or junior high school students to apply for this exciting youth apprenticeship program that may lead to full-time employment as a Water Plants Machine Repairperson!

 

The goal of the Youth Apprenticeship Program is to develop a talent pipeline for the Milwaukee Water Works (MWW).

Purpose

Under the guidance and direction of Milwaukee Water Works (MWW) managers and supervisors, the Youth Apprentice performs minor maintenance repairs to all water system equipment and assists and supports machine repair staff.

 

~ The Youth Apprentice is the first step for the Water Plants Machine Repairperson promotional series. ~

Essential Functions

  • Assist with the repair of all mechanical equipment systemwide, including valves, compressors, chemical feed equipment, distribution system storage facilities, water filtration equipment, and pumps.
  • Participate in and complete high school courses offered by the Department of Workforce Development-Youth Apprenticeship Program (DWD-YAP) related to the manufacturing/mechanical fields.
  • Weld and fabricate guards, rails, and other items related to the needs of the plants.
  • Perform custodial work and snow removal duties.
  • Assist other plant personnel with basic maintenance tasks.

Conditions of Employment

The Youth Apprentice must be willing and able to do the following:

  • Work 15-20 hours per week during the school year.
  • Have access to reliable transportation in order to report on time at work location for assigned work shift. 
  • Perform custodial work and snow removal duties.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety shoes, glasses, and hearing protection.
  • Enter and work in confined spaces and wear related safety equipment.
  • Work in close proximity to hazardous chemicals, in all weather conditions, and with high noise levels.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for extended periods of time.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Current enrollment as a sophomore or junior in high school at time of application. (April 14, 2023).  NOTE 1Candidates must be on track to graduate; verification will be requested from the candidate’s High School. NOTE 2: Candidates selected to the MWW Apprentice program must participate in the DWD-YAP.   2. Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at time of appointment (June 5, 2023).
  3. A valid government‑issued State Identification Card or a valid Driver’s License at the time of hire and throughout employment. This is required to obtain security clearance within the MWW facilities.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical:

  • Ability to learn and use a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Ability to learn and apply mechanical concepts.
  • Ability to learn safety principles and work safely and effectively in a field environment.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics to perform job-related calculations and to interpret mechanical drawings.
  • Ability to read and interpret job related documents.
  • Ability to complete the required Youth Apprenticeship educational and training components.

Organizational/Communication/Interpersonal:

  • Ability to take direction and follow through accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to stay organized and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to exhibit a positive attitude.
  • Ability to display a customer service orientation.

Current Salary

The current wage rate (Pay Range 9MN) is $15.61 hourly, and the resident incentive rate for City of Milwaukee residents is $16.07 hourly. Appointees are not eligible for benefits.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests; or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations and the Department of Public Works-Milwaukee Water Works reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.

 

INITIAL FILING DATE - The examination will be held as soon as practical after Friday, March 17, 2023 Friday April 14, 2023. Receipt of applications may be discontinued at any time after this date without prior notice. However, recruitment may continue until the needs of the City have been met. Qualified applicants will be notified of the date, time, and place of the examination. Unless otherwise required by law, the City of Milwaukee will not provide alternative test administration. The applicant is responsible for attending all phases of the job selection process at the time and place designated by the City of Milwaukee.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: The structured interview panel is tentatively scheduled for the week of April 24, 2023; with times and location to be announced. The apprenticeship is anticipated to start the week of June 5, 2023.
