Introduction

**THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF MILWAUKEE EMPLOYEES ONLY**.

Purpose

Under the direction of the Building Services Supervisor II, the Custodial Worker III performs custodial and maintenance duties and assists Custodial Workers II - City Laborers in performing team assignments within the Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) system.

Essential Functions

Event/Program Assistance

  • Provide tours of the Central Library to event organizers, including explaining set-up options and coordinating set-up and equipment.
  • Open facility; set up rooms, stage and lobby according to the organizer’s request and consistent with MPL policies.
  • Act as a lead worker on large or quick change-over events; oversee removal of non-library equipment and materials following events.
  • Contact other MPL employees for assistance when necessary and submit required reports on events.

Custodial

  • Report problems and/or other needs for maintenance work to the Facilities and Fleet Supervisors.
  • Sweep and mop all floors, including stair areas; strip, rinse, wax and polish floors and stair areas and vacuum and shampoos rugs and carpets.
  • Clean and maintain public and staff washrooms; clean mirrors, wash woodwork, tile and marble, polish metal and keep towels, tissue and soap dispensers filled. Check washrooms to prevent and address vandalism.
  • Keep supply room and kitchen area clean and in order.
  • Wash furniture, woodwork and cupboards.

Building Maintenance

  • Start and stop heating and ventilating equipment.
  • Wash light fixtures, change lamps and wash ceiling and walls.
  • Operate the library’s washer and dryer.
  • Empty waste containers, pick up trash and take refuse to trash containers or the garage dock.
  • Wash all windows and glass doors, inside and out.
  • Open and close complex, secure necessary doors, inspect interior to make sure everything is in order and free from fire hazards, plumbing leaks and other malfunctions; ensure that all members of the public are out of the facility before and after hours of operation.
  • Keep library property surrounding the facility clean and in good order.
  • Sweep, hose down, or clear snow from entrances and surrounding walkways and drive-up areas.
  • Maintain landscaping elements around library. 
  • Assist library trades staff, mechanics and other custodians in moving equipment, furniture and supplies and library materials between the Central and the Branch Libraries.
  • Schedule assignments in the absence of the Central or Branch Building Services Supervisor.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including emergencies, nights, days, weekends and holidays as needed on short notice.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds without assistance.
  • Must be able to work from ladders at heights of up to 15 feet.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job including frequent standing, walking, twisting, bending, climbing stairs, lifting and pushing items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in variable and extreme weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, and snow).

Minimum Requirements

1.    Regular status as City of Milwaukee employee, having successfully completed a probationary period for a civil service position, or status as a City of Milwaukee employee in a fixed term position.

2.    One year of experience as a Custodial Worker II – C L

3.    Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Technical

  • Knowledge of cleaning, maintenance and other basic custodial responsibilities.
  • Ability to perform minor landscaping tasks.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, rules and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to read and interpret maintenance work orders and other job-related forms.
  • Ability to safely use equipment, supplies and chemicals.
  • Ability to operate job-related tools, mechanical appliances, snow removal equipment, lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners, floor strippers, buffers, polishers and other wheeled and mechanized equipment.
  • Ability to use MS Office software including MSWord (word processing), Outlook (email), and Excel (spreadsheet) to create staff assignments and manage and track events information.

  • Ability to always exercise care and good judgment regarding safety, abiding by safety-related policies, laws, and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
  • Ability to monitor the work site vicinity, including pedestrian traffic, to ensure the safety of the custodial crew and the public.
  • Ability to perform under pressure, to manage multiple priorities, and to work within tight time constraints.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively evaluate situations and exercise sound judgement to resolve problems.
  • Ability to remain calm during adverse situations.

Current Salary

The current starting salary rate (PR 8EN) is $38,253-$42,396 annually, and the resident incentive starting salary for City of Milwaukee residents is $39,400-$43,668 annually. 


Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions of the salary ordinance. 

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: an evaluation of related education, experience and accomplishments, an evaluation of written communication, interviews and/or other assessment methods.  The Department of Employee Relations and the Milwaukee Public Library reserve the right to call only the most qualified candidates to proceed in the selection process. Information from the selection process will be used to make a hiring decision. Selected candidates will be transferred and/or promoted to the position.
