Purpose

These first shift positions are within the Milwaukee Water Works (MWW) treatment plants and pumping stations. MWW offers work assignments and training opportunities to encourage promotion through this job series.

The Water Plant Machine Repairperson provides journey-level machine repair expertise and serves as the lead worker for the preventive maintenance, repair, removal and installation of all mechanical equipment in the MWW facilities. This is the final phase in the promotional series for the water plants machine repair personnel.

The Water Plant Machinery Mechanic independently performs system-wide installation, preventive maintenance and repair duties on medium-duty water system equipment. The Water Plant Machinery Mechanic assists skilled trades personnel in performing complex and/or heavy-duty assignments. This is the second phase in the promotional series for water plants machine repair personnel.

The Water Plant Facility Mechanic performs minor maintenance repairs to all MWW system equipment and assists skilled trades personnel as needed. This entry-level position is the first in the three-step promotional series for Water Plants machine repair personnel.  

Eligible candidates who successfully complete the selection process will be placed on the highest level eligible list for which they qualify.

Essential Functions

Water Plant Machine Repairperson

  • Perform complex preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair activities for all mechanical equipment including compressors, pumps, valves, gear drives, and chemical feed equipment.
  • Perform layout and design work as well as skilled machinist bench work to complete necessary part fabrication and repair.
  • Conduct machining of tools and materials using lathes, drilling machines, milling machines, grinders, welding equipment and pneumatic tools.
  • Diagnose operating problems and defects to determine repairs needed.
  • Use the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for maintaining records of preventive and demand maintenance requests.
  • Maintain equipment logs and system status reports.
  • Act as lead worker on repair jobs.

Water Plant Machinery Mechanic

  • Mechanic Perform repair and preventive maintenance activities for mechanical equipment system-wide including valves, compressors, chemical feed equipment, distribution system storage facilities, water filtration equipment, pumps, appurtenances, and other water system equipment.
  • Perform basic equipment rigging and lifting techniques to facilitate small equipment repairs.
  • Erect scaffolding, operate overhead cranes, and set up hitches as required to perform these duties, with due regard to safety of personnel and equipment.
  • Use the (CMMS) to record preventive and demand maintenance requests.
  • Assist in keeping perpetual inventory of spare parts required to perform preventive maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
  • Perform oxyacetylene torch applications as well as arc and gas welding tasks.
  • Remove and install ornamental and drinking fountains.

Water Plant Facility Mechanic

  • Assist with the repair of all mechanical equipment system-wide such as valves, compressors, chemical feed equipment, distribution system storage facilities, water filtration equipment, pumps, building appurtenances, and other water system equipment.
  • Independently perform minor mechanical, plumbing and piping repairs.
  • Perform basin cleaning, custodial and snow removal activities; assist other plant personnel, as assigned.

All job levels:

  • Must be able to perform duties related to custodial work and snow removal.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, enter confined spaces and wear confined space safety equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and handle at least 50 pounds of equipment or material and more weight with assistance.
  • Must be able to work at heights up to 100 feet, in confined spaces, in close proximity to hazardous chemicals, in all weather conditions and with high noise levels.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate safety equipment including safety shoes, glasses, and hearing protection.
  • Must be able to work mandatory overtime and respond to emergency call-outs when needed.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Must possess good manual dexterity.

Minimum Requirements

Water Plant Machine Repairperson

  1. Four years of experience performing industrial machine repair, maintenance, adjustment, and installation duties closely related to the essential functions listed above.
  2. Ability to obtain a Forklift and Skid Steer Loader Operator Certification within six months of appointment and maintain throughout employment.
  3. Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.  

Water Plant Machinery Mechanic

  1. Two years of experience performing industrial machine repair and machine maintenance duties closely related to the essential functions listed above.
  2. Ability to obtain a Forklift and Skid Steer Loader Operator Certification within six months of appointment and maintain throughout employment.
  3. Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.  

Water Plant Facility Mechanic

  1. One year of experience performing machine repair and machine maintenance duties related to this position.
  2. Ability to obtain a Forklift and Skid Steer Loader Operator Certification within six months of appointment and maintain throughout employment.
  3. Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and throughout employment.  

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Journey level Machine Repairperson certification
  • Pump repair experience (250gpm or larger)

Technical

  • Advanced degree of mechanical aptitude and skill in machinery repair.
  • Ability to perform industrial machine adjustments, maintenance and installation.
  • Ability to solder and weld using gas and electric cutting and welding equipment.
  • Ability to perform advanced rigging and crane/hoist-assisted lifting procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of job-related mathematics and mechanical drawing.  

Judgment and Responsibility

  • Ability to direct the work activities of assigned personnel.  

Water Plant Machinery Mechanic, in addition to requirements below

Technical

  • Ability to perform precision repairs on medium-duty equipment.
  • Ability to perform minor rigging and crane/hoist-assisted lifting procedures.
  • Ability to perform basic pipe-fitting and plumbing tasks.
  • A high degree of mechanical aptitude and skill in machinery repair.  

Water Plant Facility Mechanic, in addition to requirements below

Technical

  • Skill in using drill presses, bench grinders, and hand tools common to the trade.
  • Ability to conduct basic grab sampling procedures to monitor equipment.  

All job levels

Technical

  • Basic knowledge of job-related mathematics and mechanical drawing.
  • Ability to utilize applicable computer hardware and software like the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) programs.
  • Ability to create mechanical drawings to manufacture or install department equipment.

Current Salary

Water Plant Machine Repairperson*: The current salary range (PG 7QN) is $57,143-$72,032 annually, and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $58,857-$74,193.  

Water Plant Machinery Mechanic*: The current salary range (PG 7LN) is $48,554-$62,267 [UK1] [NN2] annually, and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $50,011-$64,135.  

Water Plant Facility Mechanic*: The current salary range (PG 7HN) is $43,671-$56,454 annually, and the resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residents is $44,981-$58,147.  

* Appointment above the minimum is possible based upon level of experience and other qualifications and is subject to approval.

Selection Process

THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods. The Department of Employee Relations reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.
